Introducing myself - kidney tumour and foot melanoma veteran

Hi everyone, just found this forum through Facebook.  Since I retired aged 60 in November 2012, I have had cancer twice. In January 2014 a 3.1cm kidney tumour was removed through open surgery - partial nephrectomy: Eble Type 2 Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma, Stage T1a – Fuhrman Grade III, and so far my post-op scans have come back clear, fingers crossed for the next one due next month.  Then in May this year they discovered Acral Lentiginous Melanoma on the sole (ball) of my left foot. They are not related.  Fortunately it was still in the 'in-situ' stage (Stage T0).  Since then I have had 3 operations, the first one without a skin graft (10p size) and the second and third, a little larger each time, with a skin graft.  The last one was 5 weeks ago and finally the margins of the excised tissue were clear of melanoma. So I am learning to walk again, onwards and upwards.  I feel very lucky they were both discovered in the early stages.  Just hoping cancer is not reckoning on performing a hat-trick!   I found it very difficult to find information about the Acral Lentiginous Melanoma as it is quite rare, so I am planning on creating a YouTube video about my 'patient journey' - my husband was tasked with taking photos, etc.  I know we are all different and some people would rather not know all the details, but I want to know everything.  My imagination is ten times worse than the medical reality usually!  :-)

  • Hi Maja, welcome to the forum. I also hope for your sake that this is the end of cancer invading your body. Like you, I believe knowledge is power and I always want to know what's going on with my disease, good or bad because I want to make decisions based on what I know, not necessarily only on what others know. I realize and accept that my medical team are the experts here, but this is my life, the only one I have. Being in touch with others with cancer, such as people on this form, is a great source of information and support. It is also a reliable resource for learning about cancer and the various treatment options available. You will find people on here to be very caring and supportive, so again, welcome.

    Take care.

  • Thank you for your warm welcome Lorraine.  I had a quick skim and it seems you have been through the mill to put it mildly - I titled my intro 'veteran', but after what I am guessing your journey has been like, I don't think I am entitled to calling myself a veteran!  Not sure what the outcome of your lung surgery at the end of last year/beginning 2015 was?  Hope it all went reasonably OK and you are up and about again?

    Best wishes, Maja
