Hi All

Just came across this fantastic site today, what great support and words of encouragement are being offered here. A little about my 'story' I'm 43 years old and have had gynea problems since I first started my periods at the tender age of 10, excessive blood loss, terrible pain etc etc. Had my son 22 years ago, happy days. Problems continued until 2007 when  my GP recommended I get a coil to help with the blood loss.  I'm now on my second Mirena coil, the first was fitted back in 2007, fantastic, love it, no periods, no problems, brillo. The second one went in as scheduled after 5 years in 2012, again all tickety boo and no issues until January this year. I haven't had a period since my first coil was fitted in 2007, no monthly pain, nothing. Then back in January I started suffering the most horrendous period pain, but nothing like I've ever experienced before, this literally knocked me off my feet and put me in bed, but still no bleeding. This continued until May when I started to bleed after sex and the pain was getting beyond bearable, so off I skipped to the GP. She examined me and said she would refer me to a consultant at the local hospital. I was expecting a wait of several weeks before I got an appointment through, but no less than 24 hours later I was contacted to see the consultant 2 days later. I saw the consultant who did various tests, did a smear etc then sent me for an ultrasound. Again I expected a long wait but no, had the scan the following day. During the scan the Sonographer told me I had several 'pretty sizeable' fibroids, varying in size from 12cm, 9cm and 3 at 7cm, plus 'numerous' smaller fibroids, I also have a 5cm cyst on my right ovary. Was told to ring my GP the following week to discuss the results, but when I rung she said 'I don't think it would be right to discuss the results over the phone I need to see you face to face'. I am now due to see both my GP and my consultant who also wrote to me to say he wanted to see me in person. I just wanted to ask others if they have any experience with these pesky fibroids and cysts and does this lead to surgery? I have a long family history of ovarian and cervical cancer (Mum, Grandma, Great Grandma, both my Mum's sisters)

    Hi Essexbird I dont want to worry you but I was found to have fibroids last year and had to have a hysteroctomy.  I was told by the consultant that mine was so large it was not going to shrink and the bleeding would only get worse. I was told that  smaller ones can shrink after you have gone through the menapause but not large ones.  The ultra sound also showed a small cyst on my ovary.

    They may take your family history into account and recommend a Hystorectomy.  Its not a pleasant operation and I was in hospital for four days (they also did an abdominal hernia at the same time so I had quite a large cut) They can do this surgery without cutting you if they are only removing the womb. The fitter you are before surgery the quicker you recover.

    When you go home you are not allowed to lift anything heavier that a cup of tea and if you do everything they say youstart to recover quite quickly.  I had mine at the end of August last year and even though I have had chemo and radiotherapy (nothing to do with fibroids) as they discovered cancer cells I have recovered from the surgery quite well.  I am still not supposed to lift anything really heavy like a suitcase or move large furniture but thats because the abdominal muscles need time to heal properley.

    I wish now that I had had the operation years ago.

    Hi essexbird, 

    We're in the same boat with the with-holding results thing. Driving me mad!! After abnormal smear results I went for colopscopy. I was given lletz treatment to remove some suspicious areas and also had a biopsy taken. I was told approx 3 weeks for results. After hovering around the door mat every morning waiting for the posty, at 4 weeks post biopsy I called them to enquire. I've called them every week since.... I'm now in week 8. Finally today I was told the results are in.... But they won't give me any info as there's a meeting taking place to discus my treatment plan ..... so now the torture persists. The waiting game is the worst thing ever! The way I feel right now id rather get bad news than keep on waiting. It's hell. I hope they let you know sooner rather than later. Everyone is saying to be positive, but it's easier said than done. The best I can hope for is to keep pre-occupied enough to not think about it so much.

    Many thanks for your response and great to hear you've recovered well. To be honest I am fully expecting to be told to have a hysterectomy which I have no problem with at all, I've had my family and certainly dont need this grief anymore and given my family history I think it would be the best course of action anyway.

    Its just this waiting game that grinds my gears. I was supposed to see my GP today (17th) but when I arrived at the surgery was told he was off sick and no one else could see me, grrrrr!!

    I'm due to see the Consultant tomorrow (18th June) so hopefully I will start getting some answers and things can move forward.

    Thank you for responding. Wow! week 8 and you are still in the dark, that is just amazing. I really feel for you and yes whilst everyone says 'stay positive' its very hard when you are the one with the health issues.

    I'm seeing my Consultant tomorrow so hopefully will have some news.
