Newly Diagnosed

Hello Folks, my first time on here!

I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and am having sugery to remove nipple and 2 lymphnodes. I just wondered if anyone on here has had this operation and if they could tell me what to expect afterwards in terms of pain, discomfort, restrictions etc.

The doc has said I will need to be off work for 2 weeks and this makes me wonder how bad it's going to be!

Any help would be appreciated please and thank you x

  • Hello Bago and welcome to the forum!  I had a lumpectomy last Wednesday, not to remove the nipple but I have an incision on the side of my breast about 4" long where they removed lymph nodes and the cancerous lump.   I was only in for day surgery, which was a surprise - and a very welcome one! I didn't feel too sore for the first couple of days and took ibuprofen and paracetamol as directed, also a little morphine liquid for two nights.   I found laying in bed uncomfortable, so had a night or two propped up on the sofa but laying flat is ok now.   I am fairly badly bruised (expected) and still sore, but each day feels a little better.  By the time I go back on the 19th, I hope I am nearly "back to normal".

I did get myself a couple of soft vest type bra things, I know they sell them in Asda, Sainsburys, and they are great.  A proper bra would be uncomfortable I think as my breast is well swollen!

very best wishes for your operation, do let us know how you are.  There is always someone here with helpful advice and very kind words......

    hugs xxx

  • Thanks for the reply Purplelily :)  that's pretty much what I had in my mind really so that's good and a great tip for the bra's. Do you mind if I ask how you felt within yourself?

Think I am going to find this forum very useful.

Hoping the 19th comes round soon for you and all is well, will you require radiotherapy? xx

  • I don't feel too bad in myself, better than I thought I would.  It's just the swollen breast which is more uncomfortable than anything else.  You do have to be a bit careful how you move and can't really do much with the arm, like carrying anything.  But I am able to drive short distances with the aid of a stragegicaly placed cushion.  Under my armpit and the side of my breast is numb, which is an odd feeling. My arm was numb, but I notice a bit of feeling coming back there. I just do as much as I can, and leave the rest for someone else lol! I do feel rather tired at times, but again, I expected that.

i won't know for sure what treatment I will by having because I am assuming they will examine the lump and decide from there, but I was told chemo followed by radiotherapy. Will know more about that when I go back.

this forum is really good and everyone is so kind and friendly, so don't be afraid to come on any time to rant or just ask anything.  Family and friends are wonderful, but sometimes just to talk to someone who has been through it - and out the other side - is comforting.

    when is your op?

    best wishes xx

  • Hi bago, I had a wide local axillary on my right breast 4 weeks ago. Also had 2 lymph nodes removed. To be honest I had no pain. Came home the same day and once the anaesthetic had worn off I was fine. Had blue dye injected to identify the sentinel lymph nodes and looked lie a Smurf for 24 hours. Even went to vote with a blue face!

Surgery was the easy bit. I start chemotherapy next Monday, 6 cycles.

Then radiotherapy. I have a small scar on my breast and another under my armpit.

Don't worry, these people know what they are doing. It's not that bad.

The surgery didn't stop me doing anything. No heavy lifting obviously!

Take care and good luck. Let us know how you progress xxx

  • Well it's seems the op might not be quite as bad as I thought, everyone is different I know but I do feel a little less anxious now, thanks folks!

My op is booked for 25th so not long now!

No doubt I will be back to ask more questions but it is good to know there are people I can ask who have been through it.

    Wishing you all well xx

  • Keep in touch. Once you are healed up I'm sure you will be offered a nipple tattoo .

My chemo starts Monday. Scared doesn't cover it. Hope to hear from you x

  • Hi

I had surgery Monday 8th June, mastectomy and a complete lymph node clearance. Iv been resting most of the week and have been ok generally. I was in on the Monday and out the Tuesday afternoon. Get tired spells and past day Iv been in more pain! On co-drydramol now instead of paracetamol that I got sent home with. Luckily Iv had a district nurse and breast care nurse visiting every day as my drain site has been leaking. So they give me a piece of mind. I think the worst thing about it is , for me, is not being able to do much, with kids etc. Got to keep mind busy with other things. Good luck with surgery! I had a fantastic hospital team who all looked after me superbly! I bought a few soft comfy sports bras from Asda, only £6 each. I'd recommend. X x

  • Hi, so pleased you are back and doing well. You certainly find out if you have done too much, I went a bit mad a few days ago and ended up sleeping, dozing mostly, for about 15 hours! I was shattered but learned my lesson.  I have never read so many books in such a short space of time before.

i am still rather sore and swollen but everything seems to be healing ok, I have my check up on Friday so will know then about further treatment.

take care and best wishes xx

Yes that's what Iv been doing! It's like a false sleep, your eyes are closed but you can still hear things going on around you.

Iv not got into any books yet as my 2 year old has still been in the house with mum looking after her so I can't concentrate half the time!

Iv not got my appointment yet to find out about my results yet but they have said it will be about 2-3 weeks after surgery. Good luck with your appointment. X x keep positive!

I find it difficult at night time trying to get comfy, got about 10 pillows all around me to prop me up a bit. But once I'm asleep Iv been sleeping solid. Take care x x
