newly diagnosed 78 year old lady

I am a lady aged 78 .I am newly diagnosed with Breast Cancer. It will be 2 weeks this coming Tuesday,I first saw my Dr,and was told she believed it to be Breast Cancer.

She arranged that day to get me seen to ASAP.I received a phone call the next day ,and given an Appt for the hospital, where I had some tests done.

It was confirmed I do have Breast Cancer, and have to go back this coming Tuesday for the results ,of what type and at what stage it is .

I am also to have a CT scan and also a bone scan .So I am now waiting for results. Even though I am not yet on treatment I find I am feeling ok one minute and then so very tired the next ,I am wondering if this is a normal part of having B C even when not on medication ?I would appreciate any information .

  • Hello millyimp

i just wanted to say hi and send you hugs and best wishes.  I am so sorry, I don't know the answers to your questions, but newly diagnosed like you I can tell you that the sheer worry and panic is debilitatingly tiring. I have not started treatment yet either.

i so hope you have family and friends you can share this with, please keep posting because it does help to share worries.

    xx

  • Hi Millyimp,

Welcome to this wonderful site full of great advice and even greater people.

Unfortunately, as Purplelily has said, the worry and panic is worse at the start of this long process and the tiredness is a very normal reaction to everything happenig to you at the moment. Please keep strong and I wish you all the very best for Tuesday.  Take care, we will be thinking of you xx

  • Hello to Purplelily, and to susu,

Very many thanks for your kind replies, and for the info you were both able to give me .I do have a kind and loving Husband ,who tries to be strong for me ,and a kind and loving family who all do the same. It has hit all really hard though ,and I am trying to be strong for them too.

Not always easy though is it ,as you will both know. I do so jope you both too also have some good and solid support ,Do you know yet Purplelily, what type you have, and what treatment you are to have ,and Susu what about you ,?

I know a lot of ladies do not wish to know too much about it ,but I have the need and desire to find out as much as I can,.I am just hoping the results tomorrow will be in my favour, and as I am a great believer in our sweet and loving Lord Jesus .I have placed all this into his loving and tender hands ,knowing he will do what is best for me and my family.

I will place you both in my prayers ,and I will indeed keep in touch .

    Take Care

  • Hi Millyimp,

Just wanted to wish you all the best for tommorows appiontment. I think the tiredness may be caused by the range of emotions you are having to deal with plus its draining waiting for results/ appointments. Emotions are very powerful forces and until we get diagnosed with something like cancer, we often understimate the part emotions play in our lives.

I feel sure once a treatment plan is in place and gets underway, I can almost promise you will feel more at ease. The period between first going to the doctor and ttreatment starting is always a very stressful time and can also make us feel drained and tired.

Take care, sending kind thoughts and best wishes your way, Brian.

  • Hello Brian,

Many thanks for your kind reply, and for your kind wishes. You are so right ,in that our emotions are so powerful, and yet until we have something like this happen we are not always aware of just how powerful they are .

I should know tomorrow what type it is and at what stage, then hopefully it will be the type they think it is . They said if it is they will give me tablets.

I hope all is going well for you too Brian?

I will keep in touch and come into this site ,so for now I will say once again many thanks

    Take Care

  • Hi Millyimp,

  • Hello Kathy,

Many thanks for your reply. I am like all in here trying my best to be positive about the reults.

Today,I got the letter to have the CT scan tomorrow as well as getting the results of the other tests done last week.

It may seem trivial ,but the part I am most concerned about is (apart from the results of course ) after drinking so much water  I fear not being able to hold it while having the scan done ,has anyone got any advice please ,I would hate to find myself in the position of spending a penny while actually having the scan ,

  • Hi Millyimp,

I dont think you will find it a problem. When I was having my 37 radiotherapy treatments for prostate cancer, before going in for the treatment we always had to drink plenty of water. They wanted us to have full bladders so the radiotherapy didnt cause damage to surrounding tissue. I remember one day the nurse asked me if I had drunk plenty of water and I replied, If I drink any more, I shall look like a flipping camel. The nurse quick as a flash replied, would that be a one hump or a two hump camel.

    Take care, best wishes, Brian.

  • Hello Brian,

Many thanks for your helpful information,I do appreciate it. Your comment about a camel  is quite funny ,and brings  giggle.I will be glad when it is this time tomorrow and it is over and done with .It is set for 5pm,and I have been told it takes about 25 /30 minutes.

Then next week it is a bone scan ,but I will have a good idea by then of how that one will be,then as we say it is the hardest time to await the results.

Once again thank you ,and I hope you are keeping well

  • Hi Millyamp,

I have had both  CT and an MRI scans while having treatment for my prostate cancer. I know it is scary but the scans are okay and were soon over and done with.

Last week I had my results for my psa (Prostate cancer) and it is still very low. I feel so very lucky as I am a happier person now than ever before and having had cancer had made me look at life with differnt eyes.

Thanks for asking, Take care Brian.
