Husband diagnosis with stomach cancer

Hello. in November 2014 my husband (aged 67 years) was diagnosed with gastric cancer (T3:N2:M0) following an endoscopy, performed because of long term dyspepsia. As you may be able to see from the staging, CT scans and PET scans showed no metastases. He is currently almost 50% through ECX chemotherapy (3 x 21 day cycles), with a view to repeat CT scan in mid March, when hopefully we will see a reduction in the size of the tumour. The plan is a total gastrectomy, followed by 3 more cycles of chemotherapy. I am hoping to be in touch with people/carers who have maybe had a similar experience to this dreadful life changing event.  I believe that the total gastrectomy is still possible even if the tumour has not reduced, though easier for the surgeon if it has - does anyone else have experience of this please. Thank you very much.

  • Hello linio , you like me must be scared to find yourself here just searching for support. I have no experience with gastro cancer but am certain you will find someone who can give you advice. It is a wonderful site especially when you feel alone and overwhelmed with this awful illness. I am looking after my mum and it helps me a lot, I will keep you And hubby in my thoughts and prayers, and I send you a virtual hug too..........kerrie xxxx
  • Hello Kerrie, thank you so much for your response. On all the forums it seems that stomach cancer is not discussed very often - of the digestive tract, oesophageal and bowel by far the most common. I know the outlook and stats are not wonderful, but I just wondered if anyone with similar experiences would share their story? Thanks again.

  • Hello lynio,

As a mod, it's my mission to connect people with similar cancer experiences - and it's a very rewarding part of the job! I thought of your thread today after I read a post by someone with stomach cancer who had had an operation for it which may be relevant to you. You can read the message by clicking here and feel free to respond and ask Liryc any questions you may have.

  • Hello Lynio,  Sorry to hear about your husband I have had a total gastrectomy (my post is the one before yours). What I did not mention in the post is that the cancer touched my Pancreas and they took a slice of that as well. I was nearing 60 when I was diagnosed.  As Lucie has already said, ASK ANY questions you want of me. I am new to the site but am very open with what happened to me. As my thread says I did not suffer any side effects whatsoever and I don't truthfully know why. I do put it more down to my attitude toward cancer and that it is just another annoying illness humans (and animals) get and to worry about it only makes it worse. I truely believe that the mind is a wonderful thing that can help to fight any illnesses. We humans tend to worry ourselves into illness and if you/your husband can be of a mindset that it will not affect him I am sure that he will be OK overall (look at any animal with a cancer and they carry on as normal - accepting the operations we put them through and in general terms survive - all without the worry). The only downside to my treatment was that I had to travel daily to the hospital post op for Radiotherapy (I live 35 miles from Bristol) and to get there by car/train would take 21/2 hrs each way. All my travelling was over the Christmas 2013 when we had the floods etc so on occasions it took longer.

I don't know if it is permissible but I can give you my telephone number if your husband wishes to speak to me or you wish to talk your worries through with my wife as I am sure she had the same worries as you have right now.

    Regards

Liryc (my name reversed just to be different)

  • Hi Liryc,

Thanks so much for posting to Lynio and offering your support.

I'm afraid that we don't allow personal details such as phone numbers, home addresses, email addresses etc to be posted on the site for you own personal protection. We wouldn't want those details to be accessible to spammers etc.

We hope that you and Lynio both understand this.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi. My mum had stomach cancer 12 years ago. They totally removed her stomach. She had no chemo. She lost a lot of weight but she is still with us at the age of 84. So don't give up. Reilly
