  • Hello cantcope,

Welcome to our forum! I think your username tells us a lot about how difficult things are for you at the moment and it is only normal for you to feel this way after only getting the news three weeks ago. You have come to the right place though to meet others who have been in the same situation as you and have also felt they didn't have all the answers to their questions and I am sure they will be along soon to share their experience with you and give you some advice.

In the meantime, we have an excellent freephone service and our cancer information nurses may be able to answer some of your questions or give you some suggestions on what questions to ask when you meet his medical team again- you can ring them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) or ask them a question in the Ask the Nurses section of this forum.

I will now let our members come and say hello to you and perhaps share some insights into their own story,

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there Cantcope, I'm so sorry for your Dad's diagnosis of cancer. You've come to the right place though because everyone on this forum is dealing with cancer in one way or another; either as a patient, or as a caregiver. Most of us have been where you are too, with the frustrations that seem to go along with going through the initial stages of screening to determine just exactly what is going on with your Dad's cancer. I can't give you any definite answers as to why you aren't getting any answers, other than to say that all of these scans, X-rays, etc. take time to be evaluated and there are so many different medical people involved in the assessments that it all has to be pulled together before you can get the answers. This is a very difficult time for anyone to be going through and all, or most of us have gone through it too. I'm sure you will have answers soon and then a treatment plan will be put in place for your Dad. As for the colon cancer diagnosis he had 5 years ago, no doubt there likely wasn't any reason for him to have chemo back then because there likely wasn't any cancer evidenced then. I had colon cancer 5 years ago too, and there didn't appear to be any issues once I had the colon re-section, but here I am, dealing with lung cancer that is directly related to the colon cancer that I had and this is my 2nd lung surgery coming up on Dec. 11th. I also have bladder cancer now too. For some people, a first diagnosis is sometimes the beginning of a series of cancers that continue to reccur, either in the same place or another place.

I hope you get answers soon and then treatment for your Dad will get started. Come on to the forum any time and keep us up to date with how you and your Dad are doing as you take this journey together. I'm sure you will hear from others on here very soon. I'm glad you are there for your Dad and I'm sure he really appreciates you being there for him.

    Take care. Sending you hugs.

  • We will light a candle and place it in our front window for dad.

We are thinking of you all

  • Thank you lorraine, and i'm sorry to hear about your on going issuses you sound like a

courgeous woman to be dealing and have delt with all that you've had going on ,

The results of the pet scan are in apparently but they (doctors) arre not disscussing my dad until at least friday which then takes us into week five.

    This is so frustrating !!!

  • Hi Cantcope .... and welcome to the forum.  I am so sorry to see the turmoil and frustrations that your family are going through and like many here, understand how awful this feels.  Sadly it seems that the 'waiting for results' is always the worse part but I guess we have to just sit tight until a decision is made about treatments and go from there. Hopefully by this time next week you will know what is happening.

You did mention 'why wasnt your Dad given chemo to prevent a recurrence'.  I just wanted to say that I was given 8 chemo cycles and a month of radiotherapy following surgery for breast cancer and it still returned in my liver.  So please do not hold on to this concern too much.  It seems that with some of us, this just happens, however much preventative treatments are put our way.

I hope you can all support each other through this coming week and please let us know when you hear some news. Keep in touch whenever needed.  Sending much love x

  • While you are waiting for dads tests and treatment. Look on Youtube and search for Self Compassion. I have found peace from learning these techniques and would recommend them to anyone. I wish you all peace. We don't know the why's or how's of cancer - all we know is that many people have to walk down this road so we are not alone or different, we are with friends and caring people = I salute all of us and offer blessings to you and your family at this time

  • Thank you all for your comments and support dad has called this morning and he is definatley on the list to be spoken about tomorrow so i'm hoping that we will know what happens next tomorrow afternoon /early next week x

Love and prayers to you all x

  • Hi can't cope, Thinking of you at this difficult time , you are not alone Kathy
  • I don't actually know if I'm doing this right but for those of you who have been helping me through the past few horrendous weeks I can only thank you and pray that God has you in his keeping x, The results from all my dad's tests are finally in we got the new on the Monday of Christmas week hE has a 10 cm tumour in his liver and it's also spread to both his lungs. He has been reffered to a liver specialist who says the tumour in the liver at this point in time is to big to operate on she along with the other doctors involved in dad's case they have decided to try 3 month of chemo to see if this will shrink the tumor enough for it to be operable as well as hopefully shrinking the cancer in the lungs.Yet again we face what seems to be the long waiting game to find out when treatment is to start x
