PROSTATE CANCER - ANYONE BEEN THERE & DONE THAT?

Hi, I have just been told by my Consultant that I have Prostate Cancer.

I am aged 58 years old and married and live a relatively fit & healthy lifestyle and have been healthy for all of my life (except having my appendix removed years ago!) so it has come as a bit of a shock to the system.

I had 3 x sets of biopsies and cancer was found in the 3rd set with a Gleason Score of 4:4, a total of 8, which is quite high.

I have just has an MRI & Bone Scan and am awaiting the results before going back to see my Consultant where we will discuss the severity of the cancer, whether it has spread outside my Prostate, my overall prognosis and the way ahead with whatever treatment(s) may be suitable.

I am staying upbeat and optimistic and I really just want to know what it is that I have and how I can try to make it better.

There is a LOT of stuff out there to read on Prostate Cancer and some of it is very scarey indeed and I appreciate that I need to know the full picture before I start to worry about "what and if", so I don't worry - yet!

I wondered if there are any gents out there who have already been through a similar experience and if so, if you have any advice or pearls of wisdom to pass onto me?

Many thanks.

  • Sorry gleason score of 3+4.

  • Hi T.T.

Thanks for updating us. I am not a doctor but purley based on my own experiance I would say you should stand a very good chance. My psa was higherat 70 but my gleeson was 3+3=6 so just a little less. I tried to keep ositive and told everyone I was going to beat it and it worked for me.

I would just say, if towards the end of your radio therapy treatment you start to feel a little tired, I was advised to just go and have a little lie down and it worked for me as after a few minutes I felt okay again.

Hope things work for you as well as they did for me. Please keep in contact, best wishes, Brian

  • My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer and spread in May last year. Psa 380 after hormone injections and chemo therapy his psa has dropped to 13. This is amazing considering how high it was. He is so desperate thinking he is dying constantly angry about everything.

I support him the best that I can, but the anger is driving me insane

  • Hi Susiesue,

Sorry to read about your husbands prostate cancer and his anger. Sometimes me can get angry as its one of the side effects of the hormone therapy. They normally put it that it produceds mood swings but somewhere I have read that a few men exhibit anger as a result of the injections. At times I would hear either good or sad news and I would be close to tears. Everyman reacts differntly. I always say, cancer doesnt just affect the patient, it affect all their loved ones too. Having lost twelve family members to cancer over the years plus having it myself, I must sat I found it far harder when people I loved had the cancer for I felt so helpless. Yess I supported them as best as I could but it jusr didnt feel enough..

It is as you say amazing treatment and I am convinced it saved my life along with the radiotherapy I had.

I hope the good results keep coming and that his anger improves.Best wishes to you both, Brian

  • hi there,

its a scary time for you at the moment. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 8 years ago. I’m 58 now. Gleason score of 6. So it was contained. I was on “Watch and Wait” for about a year. Then the biopsy came. After that I thought “No way am I having that again”.  I was offered the robotic surgery or radiotherapy. Also some other trials which involved “Freezing” Hormones. And others.  I opted for surgery. Just whip it out I told them. Glad I did really. I’ve not had any problems at all. No leaking. No after effects. PSA’s have always been 0.01. It never affected my sex life whatsoever. No pumps or pills. Maybe I was lucky. But I just put it down to a very good surgeon with steady hands. I cannot even see any scars from the 5 holes they cut into me.

I hope that whatever decision that you make is the right one for you. Take on board all the advice your given.  But only you can decide. I wish you good luck and success.

  • Hi I've been through the kemo and rest have a look at billygoat on prostate cancer & living with cancer it should help.

    Billy

  • Hi woodworm, did you get the choice of both radiotherapy and surgery or not

  • Hi Channell,

No I was only given the choice of hormone therapy and radio therapy. Surgery was not mentioned as they told me later my PSA  was too high at 70.  But it worked well for me.

     Best wishes, Brian

  • Hi All.

I am new to this and have come across this Board. My circumstances are similar to those of Prostate@58 and also Telemando so I have followed their conversation. Obviously there are plenty of knowledgeable posters here. My question is: Should I carry on with this thread ( or any other) or should I start up a new one ?

  • Hi Prosixty. I recommend you start a new thread.  Look forward to reading your experiences.
