Introduce yourself on Cancer Chat

Hello everyone

Today marks a year since we launched the new Cancer Chat, how time flies! In the last 12 months we've shared our stories, laughed and cried and become a real community so I thought it was about time that  we introduced ourselves to you properly.

I'm Sarah and I'm the Cancer Chat manager. I have managed other online communities before coming to Cancer Research UK and am a cancer survivor myself. I went through my treatment in 2009, and so I know how helpful and supportive Cancer Chat can be from personal experience.

There are three moderators who work with me, Renata, Jane and Lucie. All three moderators juggle their Cancer Chat duties with their roles as busy mums and work different shifts throughout the week to ensure that Cancer Chat is appropriately moderated. They help direct members to appropriate information on our main Cancer Research UK website and liaise closely with the specialist nurse team to help answer questions or offer support. Above all, they ensure that Cancer Chat is a safe, secure and welcoming place where anyone affected by cancer can come and ask questions, share experiences and meet people who are also affected by cancer.

We thought it would be fun to tell you a few interesting facts and also share our new avatars which you'll be seeing whenever we are online.

Sarah - is a 70s music addict

Renata - is a mad George Michael fan

Jane -  is a journalist

Lucie - is French

Now it's your turn! We'd love to know more about you, so we've set up this new topic area where you can introduce yourselves and say hello to new members. Don't forget everything is public so don't disclose anything too personal!!

Best Wishes

Sarah

  • I am new to Cancer Chat, my mum was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 3 weeks ago this was a complete shock and left us devastated. She had an operation to remove some lymph nodes and some of her breast, she was doing great then had to go back in as when we got the results her cancer had spread and now she had surgery yesterday to removed more of her breast and all her lymph nodes.  Dad has had a back back for 6 months after lots of going to the doctors and back he was diagnosed last week with Lung Cancer, biopsy results were yesterday and he has stage 4 lung cancer, affecting the rib which is causing him all the pain, we have to meet with the oncologist on Tuesday to discuss Radiotherapy for this pain, they did not mention chemo and my dad is devastated as we were told this is not curable.  We have not asked how long he has as we want to take one day at a time and hope once they manage the pain there will be something else they can do for my dad, as I do not want to lose him, we are all in shock and with mum going though cancer as well, we really feel our world has ended. Both parents have been well and fit until this terrible disease has caught up with them, they are 76 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated... We are really struggling as a family...

  • Hi emeraldp2

Sorry to read about your mum and dad. I hope that coming here to talk to others will be helpful to you. If you feel like it, you could start your own discussion and give it a similar title to the one here, so that others can easily find you and offer you some advice and support.

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

    Jane

  • Jan can you tell me how to start my own thread I am just not sure how to do this I tried last night but had trouble, just my state of mind at the moment nothing is going right!!!

  • HI emeraldp2,

Don't worry - it's always hard to navigate a new site - but I bet soon you will be a pro!

To start a new thread, it is all very well explained here with pictures and everything. Feel free to read all our other Cancer Chat Tips and after that, you will know more about Cancer Chat than myself !

Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. That's what we're here for.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi

I am so sorry your family have to go through this. believe me I do understand - In 2010 First my husband was told he had rectal cancer which they believed was around stage 4 following examinations. Two weeks later I was told I had breast cancer. I had a lumpextomy then a mastectomy like your mum and all lymph nodes removed. It was a black time for us. Just to let you know I am doing OK now and the very best thing I can tell you is that radiotherapy proved very very effective for my husband. The consultant had told us that his was a very advanced tumor but in around 15% of patients the radiotherapy alone could destroy the cancer although my husband would still have to have an operation. Well he was one of the 15% and when he had his operation there was only scar tissue left which was removed along with a large part of his bowel. He is now also doing well. I know your father has lung cancer and I have no knowledge of that but I would not underestimate the effectiveness of radiotherapy. We are younger than your parents 63 and 64 and are as lucky as them in having children who care. Our son and daughter had a terrible time worrying about us and were very supportive as I am sure you will be. Your parents will cope with this with your support and the people on this site will do their best to support you as they did us. Keep strong

  • Jan thank you so much for getting in touch, this has really helped me to understand radiotherapy, it is just awful what everyone has to go through, and you certainly know what I am speaking about with you both being through this.  I just did not really understand when they said the radiotherapy was pallative care does that mean this won;t blast the rib tumour, we are meeting with the oncologist tomorrow and I know they will answer more questions, my mum is doing really well she is in a bit of pain tonight but looks good. My dad had a good day today he was up and about and making himself his lunch and breakfast and being in a good mood this also helps me better to cope, it;s when he has his down days that I really struggle.  I will be in touch tomorrow and let you know how we get on. Thanks again i feel a bit lifted and comforted by your message...  Ger xx
