5 weeks on…

CLog (part 11):

“5 weeks on” since my treatment ended, how did I even get through that, and I’m not even going to mention how I got through the 2 weeks following treatment, but we did.

Thinking back, it was tough, 30 zaps of Radiotherapy and 6 of Chemo. Each Monday involved being at the hospital for several hours, going for Radiotherapy first and then being sat for several hours whilst your Chemo was being administered.

Thinking back and reflecting on what the docs had to say, I think that I coped ok with the treatment itself, there was always somebody around me that looked to be in a worse position than me, and so I guess I was kind of fortunate.

There was a woman who started the same treatment on the same day that I did, she had the same issue and we spoke each time we met. She was on the floor after 2 weeks and I didn’t see her after 3, what happened to her, I wish I knew, bless.

A guy, again having the same treatment for a similar issue, tough looking guy who never looked as though he wanted to chat.. he was at the follow up appointment one week after treatment had finished, in a wheelchair, looking absolutely drained.

So yes, I guess that I was fortunate. Thanking my lucky stars, praying for good news when I have my scan later in the year and working hard to get back to whatever normal is going to be.

Counting my blessings…

Tracks from my years, need to listen to a song that tells a story, this is the one:

Billy Joel, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

  • I was in chemo ward yesterday having treatment.  A man came in with cakes for the nurses, he came to say thank you.  He had finished chemo and was given all clear (his words).  I felt so happy for him.  When chemo finishes it doesn't end there, like you said, got to get used to a new normal.  Have you been able to eat a meal yet Mike?

  • Hey… no food yet, but edging closer to trying something soon as I’ve not used my Peg for almost a week, so drinking my nutrition drinks and fluids.

I took cakes for the radiotherapy staff, just seemed like the right thing to do.

Where are you up to with treatment, wishing you all the very best.

Good of you to message, take care.

  • Hi Mike glad you are getting closer to your first meal.  I have metastatic breast cancer so no cure but it is stable with my treatment which is good.  Just listened to Scenes for an Italian Restaurant.  not heard it before, but like Billy Joel.

  • Glad you’re stable, and sorry to hear about your condition… thank goodness for the advances with treatment that CRUK have made in recent years, gives many of us a fighting chance against this god awful disease.

Be nice to keep in touch, you take care…
