94 year old mother has been offered stereotactic radiotherapy for lung cancer - worried about side effects

Our 94year old mother has been diagnosed with lung cancer.  She has been offered Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy.

We are very concerned about the side effects this may have on her.  Does anyone have any experience or advice that can help us please ?

Thank you

  • My experience is based on having this treatment for lung metastases rather than lung cancer however, writing here in case it's of help.

I was in my mid 60s and had 3 sessions of this treatment . The treatment itself was painless and the main side effect I experienced was quite extreme tiredness. How much of that was due to the treatment and how much to the travelling involved I don't know. My 3 sessions took place over the course of 1 week.

I would hope that the decision to offer this treatment took account of your mother's age and general health. Good luck to her - and you!

Thank you so much for getting back to me Helen!

We are worried as on top of her age and the cancer, she also suffers with COPD and enphysema.

I don know where you're based or where the treatment may take place. It might be worth seeking a second opinion. I must emphasise I don't know the protocol or niceties of the process!
