Cancer of the oesophagus

Hi I'm a 64 nearly 65 year old female. I had a gastroscopy last Thursday. The endoscopic diagnosis  was an esophageal tumour- malignant. 8 biopsies were taken . I have not yet had a definite diagnosis but fast track biopsies were requested as was a staging CT TAP scan. I am not sure what will happen next and how it might progress.

Has any one had any experience of this and what should I be doing in the meantime if anything? I've also got a holiday booked on 10th July. I hadn't got round to getting insurance. Is there a chance I will get any money back?

Thankyou as you can tell I'm feeling very worried but can't express that to my family as they are already very upset (my 40 year old daughter came with me to the appointment and the consultants was definite he thought the biopsy would confirm cancer) advice would be greatly appreciated  xx

  • Hi Helsbels,

Sorry to read your news. There’s little you can do while waiting for results, except try to relax and not overthink things. I know that’s pretty much impossible as it’s cancer and you’re bound to worry.

If your experience is similar to mine it will go along these lines …
    - an appointment with the upper GI consultant to hear whether surgery is an option (it wasn’t for me)
    - an appointment with an oncologist after an MDT meeting to discuss the scans and biopsy results and your treatment options
    - start treatment

    Good luck
    Dave

  • Thanks Dave. I have accepted now that I have to wait , but patience isn't my strength. I Joe I can't change anything . I hope everything goes well for you. X

  • Hi Helsbels, sorry to hear your news. I went for my 5 year endoscopy check up in january as I ve barretts syndrome. Three weeks later in February was told my biospies were not good. I was then referred to the royal Marsden and will be having an endoscopy excision operation later in June. I have been told it's very early stages and has not spread yet to the lymph nodes so I'm praying that might be the end of it but I think it depends what they find. I have got used to just living with it and living life day by day as it is 5 months later. I hope this helps
