Cancer of the oesophagus

Hi I'm a 64 nearly 65 year old female. I had a gastroscopy last Thursday. The endoscopic diagnosis  was an esophageal tumour- malignant. 8 biopsies were taken . I have not yet had a definite diagnosis but fast track biopsies were requested as was a staging CT TAP scan. I am not sure what will happen next and how it might progress.

Has any one had any experience of this and what should I be doing in the meantime if anything? I've also got a holiday booked on 10th July. I hadn't got round to getting insurance. Is there a chance I will get any money back?

Thankyou as you can tell I'm feeling very worried but can't express that to my family as they are already very upset (my 40 year old daughter came with me to the appointment and the consultants was definite he thought the biopsy would confirm cancer) advice would be greatly appreciated  xx

  • Welcome to the forums. You can do this. We are all here with you. Keep us updated as well. Call the helpline on 0808 800 4040 to chat with a nurse (it is closed until Tuesday morning).

  • Hello HelsBels1961 and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm really sorry to hear about the tumour that's been found. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your biopsy results, but in the meantime you can find out more about oesophageal cancer on our website.

If it would help, we have a team of cancer nurses you can talk to on the number bone-cancer-patient mentioned in their reply. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease about what's to come.

I'm sorry about how this may impact on the holiday you have booked in July as well. I'm sure some of our members will share their thoughts and advice with you soon, but do have a chat with the company you booked your holiday with to find out more about their terms and conditions. You may be able to get further help and support from Citizen's Advice.

    Kind regards,
