Difficulty processing treatment after breast surgery

I had lumpectomy and lymph node removal on 11th December 2025, Er positive, Her negative, 26mm clear margins and no trace in lymph nodes, but grade 3, so waiting for oncotype results but im struggling with the fact that they are now saying I will need chemo, to be honest, im in the middle of selling my house, move to another county on 27th Feb, and my husband suffered a cardiac arrest last year and had bypass surgery so have been looking after him which is hard enough, then having to deal with the fact that I had breast cancer it has been a lot, I only know horror stories about chemo just wondered about side effects etc or is the treatment targeted for each individual?

  • Dear Andygal

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through over the last year, both with your own health struggles and your husband's. Undoubtedly, it's been an incredibly tough time. Throw in a house and the possibility that you may now be advised to have chemotherapy, and it's an overwhelming amount of things to juggle.

It's good to hear that the lumpectomy was achieved with clear margins and that there was no trace in your lymph nodes. Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for the Oncotype results, and then you can have a clear conversation with your specialist about the concerns that you have.

It's easy to forget that not everyone experiences chemotherapy as a horror. Everyone has different experiences with the treatment, and what is difficult for one person may be much easier for another and vice versa. Until you have a conversation with your specialist about what treatment regime they recommend - and at this stage, it is still if they recommend one - then it's difficult to say how that may go for you.

I don't know what support you have around you from friends and family. If you do need further treatment, then perhaps there are people in your lives that you and your husband can ask to help support you over the coming months.

If you think it might help to talk things through with one of our team of nurses at any point, then you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on Andygal. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
