Only found out a month ago I have myeloma

Only found out a month ago that  have myeloma. Bit of a shock really. Had my first dose of chemo  on Monday.
My problem is that I have become needle phobic. They are finding it very difficult to put in a canular. The last one had to be put in my foot which wasn’t particularly pleasant. Also the various medications have caused me to have constipation. I also have the added complication that I have had a liver transplant and a heart valve replacement which means I take medication for the former as well. I become quite faint at times and need help to dress and shower. My wife has been wonderful.

  • Hello loungingsofa,

It must have been a real shock for you to find out you have myeloma and well done for getting through that first dose of chemotherapy on Monday. Poor you experiencing these issues with the canular and it's not surprising you have become needle phobic as a result. A canular on your foot? I can imagine that wasn't particularly pleasant for you.

Make sure you talk to your medical team about the fact these various medications have caused you to have constipation as I am sure they will be able to prescribe something that will help. I am pleased to hear though that your wife has been wonderful support for you and it can't have been easy especially with the added complications of having had a liver transplant and heart valve replacement. It's a lot to have to go through and I am glad you can count on the love and support of your amazing wife and I also wanted you to know that you are not alone on Cancer Chat and there are other members of our community who are going through myeloma treatment and I hope that they will come and say hello and share their experience with you. I spotted another member   who posted this thread recently about being newly diagnosed with myeloma so don't hesitate to drop them a line on their thread if you would like to connect with someone who has also been going through myeloma treatment.

I also wanted to pass on to you our lovely cancer nurses' number - you can call their free helpline Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 if you have any question or simply feel like talking things through with them.

Wishing you the best of luck for the rest of your treatment - and that they manage to put the canular in without any trouble from now on...

    Best wishes,
