New here: diagnosed with grade 1 breast cancer I'm 60 years old

Hi im new to the group and wanyed to say hello. I was diagnosed with grade 1 breadt cancer I'm 60 years old. I don't know how to feel or what to think it's all so confusing.ive only cried once and just feel numb. Is this normal?

  • Hi Jacksv I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  I think the way you are feeling is completely normal and understandable, you will be in shock.  As time goes on and you get your treatment plan it does get easier to deal with.  I was diagnosed with stage 3, grade 2 breast cancer and had lumpectomy, chemo and radiotherapy and then tamoxifen.  I was 47 and didn't cry until 2 years after treatment.  It is very confusing in the beginning with all the terms etc.  Maybe you could phone the helpline on here tomorrow or ask your breast care nurse to talk you through everything.  I am also on here if you want to chat.

  • Hello, my mum has also been newly diagnosed with Grade 1 breast cancer and she’s going into hospital tomorrow to have the lumpectomy. My mum and I feel the same, very numb and just hoping that with it being caught early it’ll be over and done with in no time. I’m sending you lots of love and hugs and a speedy recovery! X

  • Hi Jacksv,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but it is good news to hear that you have caught it early. Do you know what surgery or treatment is planned for you and have you got a date for this yet?

The way we react to this news varies from person to person and there is no right or wrong way. You will find that you get n overload of information in a very short period of time and it can be daunting to deal with. Leealoo is right, it does get easier to cope with once you get your treatment plan and start to move forward. I was your age when I was first diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. I had lost my mum to secondary breast cancer after a horrific 12 year battle and was terrified of the same fate. Fortunately, there was no comparison between what we both experienced. Diagnosis, treatment and after care have all advanced so much in the intervening years. I had a lumpectomy, then took Tamoxifen for 1 year. I was diagnosed with pre-cancer in the other breast 6 months after my initial surgery and with a second cancer in my original breast just under a year after I had the lumpectomy. This time I had a double mastectomy and then took Letrozole for 6½ years.

That was all 16 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. Try to place your faith in your care team - they are experienced and really do know what they're doing. Try not to overthink things, take things day by day, or hour by hour if need be. This is just a blip in the road, it may be challenging, but y will get through it.

Please keep in touch and remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Thejess 222,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. Do you know what type of breast cancer she has? I am glad to hear that she has you to support her on her cancer journey, as this makes a big difference. It is good that this has been caught early and that she only needs a lumpectomy. I do hope that all goes well for her tomorrow and that she makes a speedy recovery.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
