Full investigation into my symptoms and worried about upcoming procedures. Fear is taking over, how do you cope with the anxiety?

Hey everyone.

I've been going through some severe discomfort with my stomach and associated symptoms ie: weight loss, blood clots in poo, extreme tiredness etc. I've been referred by by doctor to have a full investigation including an endoscopy, colonoscopy, full blood test and a FIT stool sample test. I don't do well with any hospital procedures including dentists. I'm really struggling with the upcoming procedures. I know it needs to be done but the fear is really taking over. Has anyone got any positive advice on how to cope with the anxiety? All replies would be very welcome. Thank you in advance.

  • My technique is simply to tell myself that whenever I have an appointment, it will be over by a certain time e.g. a scan starting at 2 should be over by 4. That and a bit of deep breathing! Sorry I don't have any better advice, other than to distract yourself eg with a good book and maybe limit the "time" you allow yourself to worry if that makes sense so if you're overcome with worry at 9.45, promise yourself you'll be doing/thinking about something else by 10.00!

    with all good wishes

  • Hi Millzi79 and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms. It sounds like it's been very difficult for you of late but I'm glad your doctor is running tests to find out the cause.

I know this must be scary, especially as you've mentioned you don't tend to do well with medical procedures, but if you let each department know how scared you are I'm sure they will do everything they can to accommodate you and make each procedure as manageable as possible.

I can see you've already received some helpful advice from Helen but I hope this webpage I've found on how to manage anxiety will be useful as well.

If it would help, you can discuss your concerns with one of our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very understanding and will do all they can to support you.

We're thinking of you Millzi79 and wishing you all the best with your upcoming procedures.

    Kind regards,
