Overwhelmed - I have found out I have stage 4 lung cancer that's spread to my brain and adrenal glands. I had no symptoms apart from loss of control in hand

Was slowly losing fine control in right hand over 3 weeks. Phoned doctor, saw seen same day (Monday) Was sent to acute TIA clinic on Wednesday. Head CT done and they found two tumours. Kept in over night for more tests. Went home. The following week had more X-rays, CT, biopsies and other tests done. Waiting for full results and plans, but do know I have stage 4 lung cancer spread to brain and adrenal glands,  With NO symptoms apart from hand control that has improved with steroids. To say life has changed is an understatement..

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Ysta.

I'm sorry to read about your diagnosis. To find out you have stage 4 lung cancer, especially when you’d had hardly any symptoms apart from the changes in your hand, must have come as a real shock.

It sounds like things moved very quickly once you spoke to your doctor, and you’ve already been through so much in such a short time - scans, biopsies, tests and now the difficult wait for more results. I hope the steroids continue to help while your team works on a treatment plan.

If and when you feel ready, you might find helpful to read this information about lung cancer we have from our website.

Also, just to let you know, our lovely team nurses is available if you'd find it helpful to speak to someone directly. They’re there to listen, answer questions, or simply talk things through and you can reach them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

You're not alone in this, Ysta, we're all here whenever you need to talk or just share how you’re feeling.

    With warmest wishes,

  • Hi Ysta, I was guided to your post via admin. Like you I had no real symptoms just a pain in my side, told OA then pneumonia when infact it was lung cancer that had spread to adrenal gland, ribs, iliac bone and a lymph node. This has all happened very quickly and tomorrow I have my treatment plan meeting. Scared us not the word! What treatments are you having? Love to hear back as to how you are doing x

Hi Christina, sorry to hear of your cancer. It is a big shock to find out you are phase 4. Unfortunately I have a cancer for which there is limited options and was told by Oncologist that my time is short. I have small cell lung cancer that has spread to brain and adrenal glands. I am on chemo just now, that works well but it will come back even more aggressive.

I am taking it one day at a time and to be honest coping quite well. My attitude is mainly WTF !  I do have times when I lose it, but consider that healthy. Get my emotions out then move on. But how you cope is very individual to you. There is no ‘correct’ way.

This is very much a learning situation, not used to being ill ! How you react to the chemo varies. My issue was constipation - joy. I wish you the best and pass on lots of hugs.

Hi, just got back from my treating meeting but annoyed still waiting for some results to come back and they are the ones that could change my whole treated plan! Right now they are treating it as Non small cell lung cancer. Adenocarcinoma T4 . It showed one mutation but not the one they need so there is hope the biopsy they waiting for does show the correct mutations. At the moment it will be treated with chemotherapy and immunotherapy highly toxic? If it comes back with the mutation I need then no chemo just targeted therapy another 2 week wait. What did shock me was that the prognosis is one year with treatment but it depends on how I take to treatment etc could be longer. That hit hard but she also explained they say a year so as to help me financially with DWP payments. The treatment will be aggressive but I’m determined to do it and pray everyday the biopsy shows mutations I need. I read your reply and I’m so sorry you are going through all that you are too. It really sucks x
