Colorectal cancer

I was diagnosed with colon cancer about 6 weeks ago. Since then, I've had two CT scans, three MTRI scans, and thankfully the cancer has not spread. Initially, I was told I needed a temporary colonoscopy, which would later be reversed. However I was informed yesterday the malignant polyp was too low in the colon and the colostomy would be permanent. This has come as a real shock. I fell I could cope with the cancer (it didn't really scare me) But the tough of living with a permanent colostomy is something I am finding it difficult to come to terms with.

  • Hello TheAlchemist

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with colon cancer and that you've now been told that, due to the location of the polyp, you will need a permanent colostomy. It's understandable that this news may feel overwhelming and that you're struggling to come to terms with how this may impact your life.

Taking this news on board and coming to terms with things will understandably take time. Hopefully, you will be well supported by the specialists, including a stoma nurse, at the hospital who will help you to adjust and learn to manage your stoma. You might also find it helpful to have a look at the Colostomy UK website, where you'll be able to access support from others who are living with a colostomy.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope that your surgery goes smoothly. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
