VIN3

Had my biopsy results back today which showed VIN3, what is the treatment for this & if I choose not to have treatment what is  the likelihood of it becoming cancer? Thanks

  • Hi Lilo10191,

Our website has information on vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) which explains what VIN is and the treatment options that are usually offered which may include surgery, treatment with a cream or laser treatment. It also mentions that "VIN is when abnormal cells develop in the top layer of skin covering the vulva. It is not vulval cancer but could turn into cancer. This may take many years."

If you are hesitating about whether to go for treatment or not, I would talk to your medical team about how you are feeling about treatment and they will be able to explain fully to you what the benefits of having treatment are and whether not having treatment will put you more at risk of it becoming cancer. Feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call if you would like to talk things through with them - you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Sometimes it helps to talk to others on the forum who have had the same VIN3 diagnosis and hearing from their treatment experiences and recovery might give you some insights and reassurance. I have found for example  's recent VIN3 surgery recovery thread and  posted this thread about 10 months ago and was at the time feeling anxious about the surgery - don't hesitate to respond to these members if you would like to find out more or exchange VIN3 experiences.

    Best wishes,
