Prostate cancer

Hi , I'm new to this forum, I'm 70 years old and was diagnosed with prostate cancer stage 1 gleason 3 + 3 last May, still trying to get my head around it all ,I've opted for active surveillance as my initial treatment.

  • Thanks for the welcome Ben, I can't understand why my urologist says there is no need for any urgency for treatment at this stage, my thoughts are surely this is the objective of cancer screening and early diagnosis.ie catch the cancer early and treat it.

I would like to here from other people who have opted for this option .

  • Hi

i have been on active surveillance for about 2 years now, a PSA every 3 months and a call from urology to discuss the results. I have had 2 MRI scans and 1 biopsy and the consultant suggests that I need another biopsy as my PSA’s have recently risen. Depending on the results it’s either surgery or radiotherapy now. I am 67 and I think my Gleason was 3-4 but according to the specialists cancer in the prostate is slow growing, hope he’s right! I think the biopsy will be in around 4-5 weeks time so will post again once I get the results.

  • Hi perfect day thanks for reaching out, I was diagnosed 12 months ago now and have been going through the same surveillance as yourself, my last PSA 2 weeks ago showed a spike to 14 from 10 ,another MRI has been arranged but because of having both hips replaced reading the scan is apparently difficult so I'll wait and see what what they decide. Another problem I have is that my PSA levels are always estimated as I take finasteride as I am a long term prostatitis suferer and compound the issue further by cycling it 2 months on 2 off because of the side effects.I'm undecided what treatment i should have come the time as having a very sensitive painful bladder would be problematic with a catheter.
