I’m a 62 year old male with prostate cancer

New to this my father died of prostate cancer 10years ago I took him to his appointments and eventually watched him die

now I have prostate cancer had psa 10 score mri scan which showed legions and pi_rad 5/4 very high chance I have cancer

get biopsy results in 2 weeks saying I’m terrified would be a under statement I just know in myself the outcome is not going to be good

  • I'm in the same boat, my father had prostate cancer many years ago, and although it didn't kill him (bowel cancer got him shortly after being diagnosed with prostate cancer) I'm 72 and my psa went up from 5 to 6.9, ive had an MRI scan that they said was inconclusive, I had a prostate biopsy 2 weeks ago and are still waiting for the results of that, it's a big worry.

But the thing that's making me angry is 2 years ago when my psa was diagnosed as 5, I had an appointment at our hospital and given the finger up the bum and told that everything felt normal but my GP would be keeping an check on it, I have 2 blood tests every year due to having a couple of small strokes a few years ago, I presumed that they were also testing my psa at the same time, but I was wrong they have never tested for it, it was only at the last blood test I went for I asked the nurse taking the test if it was for psa, she said no, then I told her about what was supposed to be happening, she went to the computer to  check and confirmed that they had never done a psa test in the last 2 years, she added the psa test to the blood sample she took and here we are now expecting to be diagnosed with cancer

  • Hi Gazza3535 & Rainbowmolly, just a little information, while both your PSA scores are slightly above normal, they are still relatively low, and not high enough to confirm cancer by themselves, there are other things that can raise your PSA, most lesions are not cancerous in respect to prostate cancer, modern treatments for prostate cancer are so much better than 5 years ago, let alone 10 years, with new treatments becoming available all the time, and 98% of men who get prostate cancer will not die of it.

  • Thank you for your words of encouragement

this is a different time for me just have to see

how results go and take it from there

    take care

  • I understand, I was diagnosed 30 months ago, and remember the early days, of not knowing, going through tests and waiting for results and treatment to start were the worst, but things do get a little easier.
