Existing serious health conditions, plus NHL

Hello everyone.

My 76 year old dear husband has quite a lot of existing health conditions and has over the past year been undergoing various tests and biopsies to establish exactly which version of Angioimmunoblastjc Lymphoma he has, whether it’s B cells or T cells, the final piece of the puzzle should be known in the next two weeks or so.

My fear is that because he has Vascular Dementia, Heart Failure, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, mild Asthma, that he’ll either not be treated at all as he’s too frail, or he will be treated and his heart will be compromised. He’s considered to be an Adult With Incapacity, I don’t have Power of Attorney, therefore the decision to treat, or not treat the Lymphoma will fall to the MDT.

The saddest part of this is he has no idea that despite being at umpteen Haematology appointments talking about this cancer, he has been involved in every discussion so far, but he just cannot retain the information, not even for a few minutes. It’s breaking my heart to see him in this confused state especially as he has no recollection of any information at all, it's a very sad situation for us both.

  • Hi MRS-PS, and welcome to the forum, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband, and what an emotionally difficult time this is for you, As someone with many serious heart issues, the only treatment ruled out for me is surgery and anthracyclne's, a type of chemotherapy. I also have many other health issues, MRS-PS, my oncologist and cardiologist work together, maybe yours could as well, Though I know some people with dementia are given treatment, I know some don't, but I will have everything crossed for your husband, my best wishes to you both.
