Bit soon talking about my end of life

Hi l have just been diagnosed with lung cancer on Thursday so had a visit from nurse today so talked about my medication etc then jumped straight in with do you want to go to hospital later on or have you thought about it.Myself thought it was a bit soon as I only found out on Thursday

  • Hello Willson

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. It's understandable that this may be a difficult time for you that has brought up lots of questions and concerns.

What have the specialists said about options for treating or managing the cancer?

As you only found out just a few days ago that you have lung cancer I can understand that it felt too soon to have some discussions about future care options with the nurse. I hope that you were able to tell them that you didn't feel ready to have that discussion or make choices about your care at the moment.

Hopefully as you move forward you will feel well-supported by the health professionals involved in your care. If at any time it would help to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any support they can.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you're managing.

    Best wishes,

  • If I'd been with you I'd have genuinely told her that it was tactless. With my partner I've not met a nurse who wasn't circumspect about prognoses and future treatment/care. I'm sorry you experienced such an abrupt conversation and I'm deeply sorry you've been given this diagnosis. I hope the manner you receive going forward is more considerate.

  • Thank you so much for your reply l was off guard another day l would have said something hope you have peace

  • Something similar happened to me.
I’d not even started chemo when a MacMillan nurse asked me if I’d like to have a familiarisation visit to our local hospice!
I made a joke out of it and humorously criticised her lousy timing and apparent lack of faith in my treatment plan!

I can imagine putting my foot in my mouth if I was in that job at times but you'd think timing was part of their remit.
