Squamous lesion on back. Size of a quarter

I recently learned that a lesion that I have had on my back for 5 years wasn't eczema as my dermatologist said, but actually squamous cell carcinoma. When I first went to see a dermatologist she said it was eczema. Over the past year it's grown in size and itches and hurts to touch it.

I believe it's about the size of a quarter; is extremely itchy and scaly.

I see the General surgeon tomorrow , but I am a bit concerned that I have had it so long - too long. I try not to worry as squamous rarely becomes a problem from what I've read.

Any thoughts on my situation? Thanks,.

  • Usually the surgeon removes the lesion, as it is on your back enough margin on depth can be taken and that is the end of it. Usually the wound can be closed with just stitches.

Without need for skin graft. A quarter is around an inch so your scar will be around 1.5" or more. When healed keep the scar moisturized it will improve the appearance as the scar fades.

To help prevent recurrence, stay out of strong sunlight, wear a hat, long sleeves, long trousers / dress. Use factor SPF50 sunscreen everyday on exposed skin. This is really important!
