Cancer diagnosis.

My husband is in a lot of pain, mainly buttocks and headaches, he is losing weight, feels very unwell,  GP keeps " fobbing him off". What is the best way forward to getting help? We have considered A&E, but we are fearful he will be waiting hours in pain, only for him to sent back to his GP. Any suggestions  please.

  • Hi Alfielil,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you are having such difficulty in trying to get an accurate diagnosis for your husband. Is there another GP in his medical practice? We are all entitled to a second opinion and this would possibly be the easiest way to do this. You could also ask his GP to refer him to see another doctor.

If this fails, then A & E might be the next option. There is no guarantee that he will be sent back to his GP. Surely, it would be worth spending a few uncomfortable hours in hospital to get him a diagnosis? It would not be such a bad thing if he found himself in a lot of pain whilst there, as this might encourage the doctors to take him seriously.

Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

Thank you for your reply. My husband has seen his GP multiple times, however, his " named GP" is now semi retired. There are lots of locums at the practice, however,  as they have never met my husband before, it takes nearly all the consultation time looking at his history, and " catching up".  Each consultation is for only one problem/ condition, and only lasts ten minutes, thus, nothing gets done.                        I am a retired qualified nurse, and I know he needs bloods, full body MRI, and, or CT scans in order to find out what is going on. But who, or where do we go to get this? I hope someone, who has been in this position before has an answer, and we can go forward. To see my husband each day, in pain, losing weight, is awful and terrifying.  Thank you again. Regards.
