Cancer diagnosis.

My husband is in a lot of pain, mainly buttocks and headaches, he is losing weight, feels very unwell,  GP keeps " fobbing him off". What is the best way forward to getting help? We have considered A&E, but we are fearful he will be waiting hours in pain, only for him to sent back to his GP. Any suggestions  please.

  • Hi Alfielil,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you are having such difficulty in trying to get an accurate diagnosis for your husband. Is there another GP in his medical practice? We are all entitled to a second opinion and this would possibly be the easiest way to do this. You could also ask his GP to refer him to see another doctor.

If this fails, then A & E might be the next option. There is no guarantee that he will be sent back to his GP. Surely, it would be worth spending a few uncomfortable hours in hospital to get him a diagnosis? It would not be such a bad thing if he found himself in a lot of pain whilst there, as this might encourage the doctors to take him seriously.

Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your reply. My husband has seen multiple GPs at our practice, however, most are locums as his " named GP " is now semi retired, and only works two days a week.  We tried to make yet another appointment  last Friday to see him, however, we were told that the only appointment available is  in five weeks!  It is an absolute nightmare. I am a qualified nurse,  now retired, and feel at a loss at what to do,  so this is why I thought that maybe, there would be someone who had been in this position in the past, and could help. I thought about A&E as a last resort. I know he needs bloods taking and full body  MRI, and, or CT scans in order to identify what is going on, and hopefully diagnose. To see your husband in obvious pain and distress, and,  getting worse each day is horrific. Thank you again for reading and replying to my post.
