I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and that within a few days, you were told that surgery wasn't an option. It's understandable that you may be feeling overwhelmed by this news and concerned about what the future holds. 

Did the team explain their reason for saying that you weren't suitable for surgery? Have they recommended any other treatment options? 

I wanted to suggest that you have a look at this thread where lots of folks have shared their story about treatment for oesophageal cancers. It's worth having a look through some of the posts if you feel u to it and maybe replying to some of the members there. I'm also going to tag davek in my reply. Dave was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer quite a number of years ago now and wasn't suitable for surgery. You can read his story by clicking on his name but it's likely that he will pop along to say hello at some point as well.

It’s early days, at a similar point my surgeon (who was as subtle as a brick) handed my case over to an oncologist. 

To be fair, he did explain that he couldn’t operate because my primary cancer was too close to my aorta, but his abrupt manner upset my wife.
He arranged a consultation with my oncologist during which we discussed my treatment options and the likely outcome of each option. 

My only option was chemo or doing nothing, radiotherapy was ruled out for the same reason. That was some time ago, these days you may be offered other options such as hormone therapy. 

It’s a scary time and everything seems to take too long to arrange but you’re in the system now and, once you’ve agreed your care plan, things will start moving forward.

Good luck and please don’t hesitate to post one here where there are often a lot of OC patients at different steps on the cancer pathway lurking around.
