Very confused

I was just wondering if anybody else has experienced this as I thought the diagnosis process would be so different and I’m struggling to believe it. I got a phone call from my GP on Monday asking me to go in that same day (I’ve had several tests/bloods done recently so I assumed it was about the latest blood test results). They didn’t mention if I wanted to bring somebody with me so to me, it was just a regular appointment.

I knew I was on the pathway for possible lower gastro-intestinal cancer but assumed anything to do with that would come from the specialist I’d seen. My GP told me the CT scan from a couple of weeks earlier had shown a rather large mass on my left kidney and he told me it was cancer. I asked him if there’s a chance it wasn’t but he said it’s definately cancer. He also said there is a concern it could have spread. He told me the urologist would be in touch in about a week or so because they need to have a meeting to discuss the next steps.

I’m really confused about the process, is this how it usually is - being told you have cancer, no further details and told you have to wait? I assumed I’d find out the same time I was told was the next steps were. This is driving me crazy. How long did people usually wait before they found out what happened next? Thanks x

  • Hello Cagbag

I'm sorry to hear that you were told earlier this week by your GP that you have cancer. It's understandable that you may be feeling overwhelmed and concerned by this news.

Most commonly people are told by a specialist that they have cancer but sometimes circumstances lead to that not always being possible. It is however, fairly common for people to be told they have cancer and then have to wait for more information about the full diagnosis and treatment plans whilst a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting takes place and/or more tests are requested.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really stressful and it's natural to be anxious about what will happen next. You may find it useful to have a look at this post about how to cope with waiting for news which has some useful tips and advice.

I'd also suggest getting in touch with our team of nurses before your next appointment with the specialist. I know that they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer any advice, information, and support they can along with helping you think about the types of questions you might want to ask at the appointment. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (excluding bank holidays).

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long now for some news and the team will be able to give you some answers and reassurance. In the meantime, keep in touch Cagbag and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Jenn, I had a lovely chat with one of the nurses on the phone and I’ve got my appointment date for 3rd June so they gave me some advice for the appointment.
