Recently been diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ, Breast Cancer.

Im absolutely terrified as I have my lumpectomy operation next Tuesday ,21st May. Will my breast be a different shape? What will the pain be like?, will I be able to get up and walk about? I’m so worried about the operation, I feel sick with nerves.
Like everyone else, I was so shocked when I got the news. I’m also very concerned about the Radiation therapy/ chemo after.

  • Hello dear lady, I had a lumpectomy for DCIS on April 9th. Please don’t worry too much. The surgery is brief, the pain is minimal, only needed paracetamol to keep it at bay, my results last Friday was clear margins, so I’m very lucky,  obviously I cannot have an opinion about your case, as we are all very different, but I will say that the pain was a great deal less than I imagined, once I had recovered from the anaesthetic I could walk around, if not a bit more carefully and a little slower, but still very manageable once the dizziness of anaesthesia wore off ( 24 hours) I have other health conditions that warranted an overnight stay for specific monitoring ( clotting disorder, and diabetes2). All I can say was the hospital staff were amazing, and I do mean amazing considering the state of the NHS at present.  Not one sour faced member did I see. All very gentle and very comforting at all times. I would suggest you get some front opening post surgery non wire bras, ( I bought mine in Primark if you’re in the uk, )as they are so very comfortable when you are likely to feel sore. Also men’s type pyjamas, trousers with button fronted shirt style tops. ( easy access for wound checking, as arm lifting can be difficult if armpit surgery is included) I wish you all the very best,of luck and much healing thoughts. Best wishes dear friend x

  • I have just bought the same bras as you in primary, thank you for the great advice.x
