Lisa - partner has prostate cancer

Hi all my name is Lisa and my partner was diagnosed with what he was told aggressive prostate cancer.

He has had scans, biopsy and blood tests this was back in December 23.

He was die to have an appointment with consultant today 26/4/24 to discuss the treatment he has opted for which is the new trial cancer treatment unfortunately this appointment was cancelled less than 24 hrs before he was to be seen !

The reason they gave was that they don’t think they would have time to see him, how can this be when he was asked if HE could make an 11am appointment .

He has I feel been messed around and just wants to get his treatment started he has lost a lot of weight which we are thinking is stress related this has caused a lot of upset for my partner and his and mine families.

Just wanted to reach out for hopefully a bit of advice.

  • Hi Lisa and a warm welcome to the forum though sorry you have to be here and that your partner has prostate cancer. Unfortunately cancelled appointments are not uncommon as hospitals are under funded and short staffed, I promise you are not personally being messed around I have had 4 appointments cancelled or changed lately .If you phone the hospital Monday to ask for a new date, tell them  how it's making you all feel, and tell them you can fill in if someone else cancels at short notice. Can i ask you, is your partner already on hormone therapy while he waits for the new trial cancer treatment, and have you told your doctor about your partners weight loss. it is important you.  do. PS i too have aggressive prostate cancer, 2 years now, and if i can help, you only have to ask, take care.

    Thank you for replying

my partner went and saw his gp yesterday and he sent an urgent email

No my partner hasn’t started any hormone treatment

my partners daughter has put a complaint into pals at the hospital but it could take up to 5 days for a response, I dont know if my partner mentioned the weight loss to his doctor but that’s another thing I found strange he hasn’t been weighed by his gp or at the hospital when this all started ?

Please stay strong yourself can I ask what treatment you are having.

    regards

    Lisa x

Hi Lisa, I hope your partner mentioned his weight loss to the doctor it is important he does, Can you tell me what the new cancer trial treatment is called as usually when you get your diagnosis if it's aggressive you start hormone therapy straight away, I would ask for an explanation, It's good you have contacted PALS, have had to use them as well and they were very helpful. Lisa i was diagnosed locally advanced prostate cancer LAPc July 2022 and started hormone therapy HT the same day, Was due to start radiotherapy RT February 2023 but needed an operation, a "TURP", so put back to April 3rd, I had 20 sessions of aggressive "much higher dose" RT targeting the whole pelvic area as my cancer had spread locally, i still have my HT injections every 3 months and will continue to September 2025 as long as they are working. take care

This is what my partner has they said that it’s contained in the prostate

it is the new hormone therapy that he is going for and no he hasn’t started any treatment this is what the appointment was for yesterday we presume to let him know when he would be starting the treatment .

Hi Lisa that's great news the cancer is contained, though still puzzled as to why he didn't start HT when he got his biopsy results, hopefully now PALS are involved your appointment should be soon and you can ask them yourself, Lisa HT usually follows a 28 day ADT course so if your consultant tells you HT will start in 2 or 3 weeks that is why. best wishes to you both, take care.
