GERD DIAGNOSIS

I was diagnosed with severe GERD nearly 2 years ago, I have had every test possible, eg, endoscopy, colonoscopy etc & nothing untoward was found. I have been prescribed various PPI's which haven't always helped, but I have now settled & agreed to take Lamperazole on an as & when needed basis on a 15mg dose.

However, I haven't taken it for 3 weeks & noticed a pain under my breastbone like a severe throbbing when I've eaten, like my food is stuck just under my breast bone, & it has started to 'throb' continuosly. I'm also getting  jabbing pains in my neck. I am scared this is the beginning of either oesophagus or stomach cancer,

I'm scared to go back to my GP again, & wondered if anyone else has had similar issues & was later diagnosed with cancer.  I might be worrying needlessly but any relatable stories would be appreciated so I can see if I need to go back to my GP. TIA

  • Hi,

I have been on Lansoprazole for many years & I've found, if I don't take it for a week or two, the chest pain comes back again with a vengeance. I didn't get neck pains but my throat was painful (the acid burns your windpipe & throat). Have you started taking it again since you've noticed the pain? I suggest you take it every day for a week or so - if it's GERD you will then start to notice it's working and I suggest you take it on a more regular basis. Good luck,

    Angie (Melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie, thanks for your reply. I will start them again & see what happens. I have read a couple of gov UK medical papers where they say PpI's can mask cancer symptoms so am wary. But, if you've been taking them a long time with no issues then I guess I should be ok & it's just the GERD, unless the pain continues. It's just can be a worry.
