Myself - having tests to find primary cause of cancer but struggling with the pain. Is this normal?

Had PET scan last Friday to find primary cause of cancer.

Known I have cancer for six weeks now but no treatment started as yet, is this the norm?

Struggling to control my pain relief. Having morphine patches and 2gm of oral morph every four hours, but it is not touching the sides.

I am in touch with the Macmillan nurses, but honestly struggling to control the pain and can only walk about 100 yards without having to rest. I am at a loss to know if this is how others feel?

  • Hi Guy,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear of your situation and the fact that your pain is still not under control. What strength of Morphine patches are you on? I am not a doctor, but these may need to be increased in strength, but between these and your oral Morphine, you may feel quite tired. When are you due to get the results of your PET scan? Your care team are trying to find the primary source, so that they can target your treatment accordingly. Don't worry about the length of your wait for treatment. You won't be left any longer than is absolutely necessary to get things right.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi Jolamie

I have just got off the phone from my doctors and the are increasing my dosage of the patches.

I should have the results of the PET scan on Friday at the latest. Which is good.

I guess I am a little anxious with regards to the results.

    Thank you

    Guy.

  • Hi Guy,

It is only natural that you are concerned about the results, but you will find it easier to know what you are dealing with, rather than living in limbo and not knowing what is happening. I sincerely hope that your care team have identified the primary source and that you won't need any further tests.

I am glad to hear that your GP has increased the strength of your patches and I hope that this helps.

Please let us know how you get on with your results. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine
