Waiting for core needle biopsy results. How do you cope with the waiting and uncertainty?

Hi,

I'm sue , 51.

Went for my 1st ever mammogram begining Feb, never thought anymore then had a letter for a hospital Appointment 2 weeks later. Had another mammogram, Ultrasound & a, biopsy & given an appointment for 10 days time for results. Had a  phone call from consultant 8 days in to cancel upcoming results appointment & booked me in for a core needle biopsy which I have had this morning.

I have a new appointment booked for 2 weeks time with the consultant for results.

How do you cope with uncertainty! I feel in limbo  & Google doesn't help ( as we all know ) .

I know its all been done super quick & I'm so grateful, but how do you help pass the "waiting to know" time xxx

  • Sadly there's not much you can do but focus on anything else rather than the fact you are waiting on results.

I've waited an awful long time for various parts of my treatment... i waited 4wks for my "urgent" referral, 6wks for the results of my last lumpectomy.

You try and carry on with your normal day to day stuff, keep yourself busy, anything to stop your mind going overboard with worry. Focus on the mundane tasks or a hobby, anything to keep your mind busy.

Hopefully the core biopsy results will come back fine.

I was told I had Breast cancer before they had even got the results, they said they were so sure that if the results came back negative I'd have to have another one!

  • I don’t think we really do cope with the waiting but it’s a case of having to.
like you I am on my 7-10 day wait for results and whilst the nurses seemed positive I have still picked up every tiny seed of doubt I may have got from their demeanour, the way they spoke about it etc and convinced myself that my results will be bad.
it doesn’t help that my biopsy site is killing me since having it done Wednesday and that eats into my anxiety too.
I have everything crossed for you and just try and breathe and relax. Find something to try and occupy yourself even if it’s just a walk or out for a coffee. I am concentrating on it being a rugby and Grand Prix weekend as that’s my thing!xx

  • Thank you ️

I'm trying to go with the attitude what will be will be but I do have my scared days.

Wishing you a mountain of luck in your journey, have you decided to go with the chemo?  Xx

  • Thank you ️

    It's a tough time isn't it.

I'm trying to be positive but the "silence" is deafening sometimes.

Yea my sites are really sore. The sports bra helps as it's supporting but soft.

  • Oh it's understandable that you will have the days when you are terrified, it's scary stuff we are dealing with.

Just try to do your normal day to day things, keeping things as normal as possible helps.

Spoke to my BC nurse this afternoon and I.confirmed that I Would be having chemo.

The rest of the afternoon I was bordering on hysterical! Xx

  • Hi Sue,

A very warm welcome to our forum,

More people are recalled after their first mammogram than any other. This is because there are no previous mammograms to compare the findings with. As others have said, we cope with the uncertainty because we have to. Keeping yourself busy does help to take your mind off the wait for a while. Most of us would agree that it is one of the worst parts of our cancer journey. Sitting waiting in the realm of the unknown, is always difficult. Irrespective of the outcome, it becomes easier once you know the results.

The worst thing you can do at this stage is to turn to Google. It concentrates mostly on the more spectacular cases, won't give you any answers and will only worry you more. Having to have additional tests is always a concern, but it is important to get an accurate diagnosis in order to get the correct treatment, if you need any. Just because additional tests are needed, doesn't always signify anything sinister. Sometimes results come back as borderline or scans are not as clear as they might be.

I am glad to hear that you have had the core biopsy and are now waiting for the results and I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Vickie,

Don't worry about the biopsy site being sore. This is normal after having a biopsy. Mine was sore for quite a while afterwards. I hope that you enjoy your weekend of rugby and the grand Prix. Here's hoping that your results come through soon.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
