Angel62 - has anyone had or been offered the bone treatment called Zometa?

Hi

I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the Lymph Glands in February 2023, they could not find the primary source.  i received 6 rounds of chemo, Surgery end of August 2023 (left clearance of Lymph glands) and 3 weeks of radiotherapy, i am currently on anti-cancer targeted therapy called Phesgo, administered into my thigh every 3 weeks, this will continue up until Sept this year. I recently visited my Oncologist for a one off appointment as i have been struggling with itching/stinging sensations in both arms since last November and my phesgo was paused over the past 6 weeks just to see if this sensation improved but it didn't, and i am now back on the phesgo, and still experiencing these neurophathy symptoms, i have been prescribed amitriptyline to help as i have difficulty sleeping, so giving them a try but nothing seems to work, and i've tried all the creams available, but it is under the skin and not on the surface.

During my visit i was offered Bone treatment called Zometa, to be administered intravenously every 6 months for 3 years, which i signed up to.  It is to strenghthen bones and can reduce the risk of cancer returning. However, since my appointment i have been researching this drug and there is a rare side effect called Osteoncrosis of the Jaw (ONJ), and apparently the risk is higher for those having received chemo, Radiotherapy and steroids, all of these i have had.  I read that ONJ is a nasty condition which can affect the jaw bone, teeth and sinuses and there is no cure as the jaw bone can deteriate. i am really worried of getting this condition as i have had bad experiences with tooth extraction, where a dry socket left me in pain for weeks and took so long to heal, and also had a bad mouth infection just months before i was diagnosed with cancer.  Is anyone currently receiving Zometa or have received it, as some feedback would be helpful. I feel i should have asked more questions, and i am normally prepared to ask, but on this occasion i didn't expect to be offered any additional treatment as it was never mentioned as part of my treatment plan previously.

  • Hello Angel62,

It can be scary sometimes when signing up for a new treatment to read all the side effects that go with it; the list seems endless sometimes and some of the side effects described can be rather off-putting but it is important to remember that not everyone will get side effects and the rare ones like the ONJ you describe will only affect a small minority. Our website has information on Zometa (also known as Zoledronic acid) which I hope you will find useful and we also have a page on jaw problems (osteonecrosis) and cancer treatment. I think it is worth bearing in mind that these side effects are rare but if you are worried about these, do talk to your medical team before you start your treatment - they will be able to reassure you and tell you more about this side effect which you are concerned about. Feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to answer questions you might have about Zometa.

I remember welcoming other members to the forum previously who were also worried about Zometa side effects and if you would like to hear from the experiences of others who have had the Zometa treatment, I thought I would share with you  's Zometa side effects thread and you are welcome to respond to it and share your story if you wish to do so.

I hope that you will be able to connect with others here who have had the Zometa treatment and that you will benefit from hearing from their experiences. Bear in mind though that no two people are the same and therefore what may be a terribly inconvenient side effect for one person will not necessarily be the case for another.

Best wishes and best of luck for your treatment,

  • I'm due to have this as an infusion on Tuesday and I agree the side effects have scared me and I don't have a dentist here in Scotland so feel very much left out. I do have atelephone appointment on Friday but my oncologist just tell me what she wants to do, feeling quite frustrated as I know nobody else with breast cancer or on this treatment.

  • Hi ladies I have lymph node cancer I have been on zoneta for nearly 2 years and I’m due my fourth injection in April, I have been fine and the only side effects I had was my first dose where I felt tired and sick, the others I have been fine with. I was told that I might get brittle bones without it as chemo makes the bones weak and I did break my leg in 3 places before I was diagnosed so it has been good for me.

  • Hi Ladies I have had 3 infusions of zometre so far and I’m due my 4rth in April, I have lymph node cancer and I was told that the infusion stops the bones from being so brittle after chemotherapy, I only felt sick and tired after the 1st infusion and have had no side effects since, I broke my leg in 3 places before I found out about my lump under my arm so they advised me to keep the bones stronger and keep going with the infusions

  • Hi everyone, i had my infusion yesterday afternoon and was fine wanted to know if I had seen a dentist (I said sorry there are non on NHS and I havent got round to finding one privately)

Funny I was given a Adcal-d3 prescription 1st I knew of this. my oncologist is useless. I took a tablet last night and within an hour had the most horrible jaw and teeth ache. I finish a crown treatment  Nov last year with the students at the dental teaching clinic. Did my mindful healing immersion and ironing took my mind of it. Feeling OK this morning apart from my brain being away on vaccation. Hope you are all doing well stay positive.

  • Update on my infusion after 24 hours I was completely floored, pain everywhere especially neck and shoulders, rest and recovery in bed and 24 hours later I am on the mend. Speacking to my appointment withg a nurse she said these flu symptoms often happen with the1st dose but rarely afterwards with subsequent ones. So these things com to pass and I am now feeling much better.
