Hi Mark and welcome to Cancer Chat.
I'm sorry to hear you have prostate cancer and about the difficulties you've been having with your bladder since starting radiotherapy.
I hope this information we have about the bladder problems that can occur whilst having treatment, and how to manage them, will help make things easier, but do be sure to let your medical team know so they can help you with this as well.
I'm sure some of our members who have been in this position will share their experiences and advice with you soon but if you'd like to discuss this further with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to help.
We're thinking of you Mark and wishing you all the best with the rest of your treatment.
Kind regards,
Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
Hi Mark
I had 25 sessions of pelvic radiotherapy for vulva cancer. My bladder was an absolute nightmare at the time. I had to have a really full bladder before every treatment then once I got home I was literally running to the loo every 10 minutes. Sadly I'm still struggling 18 months on from the end of treatment with urge incontinence.
I'm sorry I don't really have much in the way of advice but if you want to chat about it feel free to message me.
Hello Mark and a warm welcome from me. I'm one year on from you, same treatment plus a TURP 6 weeks earlier, Absolutely normal your bladder issues, most of us had them some worse than others. after RT I was peeing for about a second every time i went, which could be 5 times a hour and at getting up 8 to 10 times a night. Mark there is no quick fix I'm sorry to say. It's exercise. diet and your bladder healing from RT damage. kegel/pelvic floor exercises easy to find online and so important. Voiding, when you need to pee try to hold it in, it will take a bit of time to see much improvement so be patient and if you can do it in the bathroom it gives you a little more confidence to try harder, I also did pilates as it strengthens the muscles in your lower abdomen. Avoid spicy and hot "curry", foods, no caffeine, alcohol, fizzy drinks and artificial sweetners, Drink plenty of water as you are at increased risk of infection and water will help in prevention. Mark it took me about 4 months to get to where my incontinence was hardly an issue, peeing every 2 to 3 hours with plenty of warning i had to go and being able to hang on for half a hour, and only getting up a couple of times a night. hope this helps, take care.
