2nd Opinion after Smear test...

Hi,

I had my routine smear test, never miss them! Been coming back normal or negative every time. I'm 39 and yesterday during my smear the nurse tells me she can see markings on my cervix. She said it's usually nothing, could be a polyp or cysts etc but she wants a second opinion from my GP just to be sure.

I have really bad health anxiety and that has just made my brain go from 1 to 100!

Would love just some reassurance if anyone has gone through this. I have 3 young children home. I just can't stop thinking about the worst!

My Dr's app isn't until next Thursday.

Everyone always says the waiting is the worst!

  • Hello CloBib82

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so anxious after your recent cervical screening appointment. It's understandable that you're feeling worried.

It's good to hear that you've kept up to date with previous screening appointments and that the results have never previously given cause for concern.

It's important to remember that there could be any number of reasons for the markings that the nurse spotted during your appointment and I'm sure if they had immediate concerns they would have arranged a referral to a specialist or asked a GP to see you sooner. It does sound from what you've said as if the nurse is being proactive in checking things.

Hopefully the Dr will be able to give you some reassurance when you see them next week and your cervical screening results will bring more good news.

In the meantime, if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses from some support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you so much for replying!

Your reply was really needed as it has calmed my nerves and should stay positive throughout the wait :)

  • Hi i just wanted to reassure you-  this sounds very similar to me, I’m 37 and usually always have normal results (apart from in my 20s i did have an abnormal one and had a colposcopy) but been normal for about 15 years. I had my smear a few weeks ago, and when the nurse saw my cervix, I told her to tell me if she saw anything unusual. So she did … she said it looked like I had a mark on it, could be nothing. She said it’s a red patch. Which worried me. But sh e also said this can be normal. Sometimes it just appears. And I will know more when I get my result. I got  my result after a couple of weeks and it was completely normal! ️

  • Thank you so much for replying! Everyone around me keeps telling me to stay off the Internet and forums but this is what I want to see, others who have been through similar experience letting us how normal it can be and not to always think the worse.

I'm glad your results were normal :) I'm hoping mine will be too x
