Trip neg breast cancer stage 3

Hi all

I was diagnosed May 2nd 23 and was advised of a good outcome/prognosis. I started chemotherapy 22 June 23 and had my last chemotherapy 22 November 23.

I had my lumpectomy and 6 lymphnodes removed on Jan 4th 2024 and I am recovering well. All scar tissue and nodes removed have tested all clear.

I have now been referred back to the oncologist for radiotherapy and more immunotherapy. I may have to go on further treatment/tablets as some results were borderline for hormone receptive.

It hasn't been easy but I'm a very positive person with lots of support, i am very lucky. I was told by other cancer patients and carers that it's afterwards they felt most vulnerable, lost, confused and anxious. Obviously I didn't understand at the time but now I do. It is such a strange feeling... I sometimes feel detached from my own feelings. Was that me that's just been through the last 8 months?

My journey is not over yet but even now, i feel the person who went through chemotherapy was a different person who is typing this message now.

Maybe I haven't dealt with it? Or maybe I have ??

One day at a time I say

Best wishes to all xx

  • HI Jan,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

It sounds as if you have had a pretty rotten year. I am glad to hear that you are a positive person and that you have plenty of support around you. Unfortunately, the way you feel now is normal, A cancer journey equates to the biggest rollercoaster ride you're ever likely to encounter - up oner minute and down the next. You have come through a lot in the last 8 months, and you must have felt really downhearted to discover that the cancer was back, less than 2 months later. I am glad to hear that you are recovering well from your recent lumpectomy and it is reassuring to hear that your lymph nodes were clear.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer too. I had a lumpectomy for the first and a double mastectomy for the second bout, a year later. Like you, I was assured of a good outcome with the first bout. I took Tamoxifen for a year after that, but when we discovered that this hadn't worked, I changed to Letrozole for 6 and a half years. that was all 14 years ago and I still lead a busy life.

I felt like you do now to after surgery and became terrified of getting a third bout, but I attended a number of courses on moving forward, exercise, etc and this helped me to regain my positivity. I also had some counselling, which was a great help. Perhaps you might find it helpful to attend a charity like Maggie's to chat to others, where you'll discover that you are not alone in this?

I sincerely hope that your treatment is more effective this time.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes I am looking into all the above you have mentioned. I will definitely be visiting Maggies again, only been a couple of times but enjoyed it.

  • Hi Jan,

Have you used Maggies counselling services, or availed of their alternative therapies? There are a number of other cancer charities dotted around the country which offer similar services. We formed a self-help group after our pain management course finished and this was very helpful too.

I wish you every success with your fight and I'm sure that your strength and positivity will return given time.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
