breast cancer back after 11 years

Aww dear here we go again. in 2013 l had a mastectomy and reconstruction on my left breast.  On 28th September 2023  l had a routine CT scan as l had been a smoker in the past and was told i was being urgently referred for breast screening. To cut to the chase the breast cancer has recurred and is on my chest wall.  I am waiting for surgery and just wondering if this has happened to anyone.

  • Hello spoony,

I am so sorry to hear that your breast cancer has recurred and is on your chest wall. I hope you won't have to wait too long for surgery. I can imagine this is a stressful time for you especially as you are probably reliving what happened 11 years ago. It's good though that they picked it up though during this routine CT scan and I hope that you find out more soon and that the surgery is a success. Being diagnosed with breast cancer a second time can be really hard emotionally but I am sure you are in very capable hands. Our website has useful information for you on treatment if your cancer comes back

This is a time when you are bound to have a lot of questions in your head and if you would like to talk to one of our cancer nurses and ask them anything that springs to your mind, feel free to call them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

You are definitely not alone and there are other members of our community who have experienced a breast cancer recurrence after many years. I hope that they will see your thread and that they will share their story with you. Just one example I have come across,  was in a similar situation a year ago and saw her breast cancer return 9 years later after a double mastectomy and lymph node removal. You can read her story here and feel free to respond if you wish and share your own experience. It does help to talk to others who have been through this before and I hope that this friendly forum will enable you to connect with others who have been in a similar place before.

We're thinking of you during this anxious time and we're wishing you the best for your surgery. Keep us updated on what you find out if you get the chance!

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Spoony,

I hope you're currently well and I'm assuming that by now you will have undergone your chest wall sury.  I saw your post on here and as I'm currently going through something very similar I would be interested to know about your experience. I'm currently waiting for chest wall surgery for recurrent, triple negative breast cancer. My surgeon has told me I'll have to have 3 ribs & part of my sternum removed. Followed by plastic surgery to repair the wound.
