Kidney cancer urology appointment

My mum, (69) has been recently informed about some masses. One on the liver, it now is aparrently nothing and one on the kidney 4 to 5 cm. After 3cts and finally an ultrasound the specialist said its suspicious. It's been a long wait but finally a video call appointment. I didn't know this was a thing. Has anyone had this? Im going to be with her on the video call. I just don't know what to expect, what to ask. What treatment will happen. I'm also concerned they're not just gojng ahead with a biopsy. Any feedback would be great.

  • Hello Dio,

I am so sorry to hear about the discovery of these masses on your mum's kidney and I hope that your video call appointment will shed some light on what is going on. It's good that you are going to be with her on the video call and I would advise you make a list beforehand of the things you would like to ask to make sure you don't forget, for example what treatment plan they have for her and whether they will go ahead with a biopsy. Anything that springs to your mind, make sure you write it down and bring it up during the video call. Other members of our community will have had a similar urology appointment and will be able to tell you more about what to expect from this video call appointment. There is useful information too on our website on kidney cancer which might be of interest to you and which you could read before the appointment.

Don't hesitate also to give our cancer nurses a call if you would like to talk things through with them - you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 and their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that the video call goes well and that it provides some answers and reassurance on what the steps ahead might be. Keep us updated if you get a moment on what they have discussed with you and I hope that you will be able to connect on the forum with others who have had a similar diagnosis.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Dio sorry about mums problems I’m in a similar situation but they can’t get my  biopsy as they couldn’t get into my kidney as mines uterus as well. I was just going to say record your call fr9m r phone so you can play back and listen again *** sometimes your head gets fuzzled.Good luck let’s hope it’s good news

  • Hi Willow,

    Sorry to hear your diagnosis.

I did record it to take it all in otherwise it's easy to miss anything. It's an overwhelming time. It's a bit strange doing a video chat.

Op was done in October. Didn't do a biopsy as it looked suspicious. Good call in a way as it expidited the operation day.

I hope your treatment goes well soon.

  • Thankyou well I’m glad it went well with mum how is she doing ? Xx

  • These things are never as you expect.the operation was unpleasant but necessary. Healing is going well. Are you due for the op soon?

  • I’m sorry to hear that but at least it’s done now. And hopefully on the road to recovery,I have a rare prognosis Neoplasma of the renal pelvis and urethrer ,They went in internally with camera but couldn’t past urethrer to get into my kidney for biopsy as they were going to biopsy and then blast the few kidney stones and the tumour away.So I’ve had to have a stent and go back in for procedure 9 feb in between they’ve just done Ct scan of lungs as aggressive and to see if it has gone to them,I’m feeling sicker and more poorly every day my breathing is getting tight I know I should admit myself to hospital but I’m on my own with my little dog I have elderly parents and dads just broken his shoulder so I haven’t got much support as everyone seems to be in a muddle with their lives at the moment,Sorry I’m waffling on……..Thankyou for listening x

  • I hope the lungs come back clear and everything is benign. They should have a good idea if it's of concern.

Hospitals are horrible places to stay but a visit to a and e may be worth trying. It's good that you are around for your parents but remember your health and wellness is important for helping them.

Your not waffling. It's such a hard time waiting, It's hell.

  • Morning, hope your doing ok ,so sorry for late reply I trod on my iPad,I don’t know what I’m doing half the time in the night sleeping impossible with night sweats they are awful! I haven’t had any conversations with consultants etc about symptoms I feel I’ve been left to get on with it until he has full tests but 22 November my tests started ,did you have to wait for a long time,?

  • Morning,

I'm guessing your in England? I'm in Scotland so I don't know if things differ much. It felt slow but from first issue found to operate was around 10 weeks. 2 to 3 weeks for the ultrasound after already performing cts.

It was an overwhelming experience. I thought I'd known stress but that was hard.

Don't hesitate to chase up everything. Do you mean left to get on with it until your results? I get that.

Try and focus on the little positive things, I was stressing looking at websites about all the worst things and could feel myself getting exhausted and Ill. Were all different but I just focused on small positives, even if small. it helped me some.

  • Thankyou for your kindness yes I’m in England .May your mum continue with good health she’s lucky having you at her side sounds like mine and my mums relationship but poor mum Lot older now I don’t nt her having to lose me .take care and thankyou xxx
