Waiting for initial appt

So I’m currently awaiting an appointment for the breast clinic on the 16th. I was on holiday 3 weeks ago and started with pain across the top of my breast. I initially put this down to sleeping funny but when checking myself I found a lump. The nurse at the GP also felt the lump. My mum had breast cancer (survived) at 50, I’m now 45.
I’m now in a cycle of poking and prodding myself and thinking the worst. I’m now feeling more lumps (probably hormonal). The next 10 days are going to be the longest! I share the pain with everyone else who are in a similar situation right now.

  • Hi Funkyfee,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you now find yourself in this unenviable position. I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer, which had spread to her brain, bones, liver and lungs. I am so glad to hear that your own mum has survived her bout. Because of the family history, I was naturally terrified when I was first diagnosed. I had a lumpectomy, then discovered a second lump in the same breast the following year. I had a double mastectomy second time around and haven't looked back since. That was 14 years ago.

Diagnosis, treatments and after-care have all improved tremendously in recent years and there was just no comparison between mum's cancer journey and mine. I know that it is only natural to keep poking and prodding, but do your best to leave your breasts alone. Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be cysts or fibrous changes and some women have naturally lumpy breasts. It is a fact that only 2 people out of every 10, who attend the cancer clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis.

I sincerely hope that all goes well for you on 16th and that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for responding. Sorry to hear your story but glad to hear you’ve had a positive outcome following treatment. Thank you for your words and I’ll do my best to keep calm between now and my appt.

  • So I had my appt today. I have an enlarged gland in my breast and showing signs of fibrous changes. All clear thankfully.
now wishing I had asked about the enlarged gland but will just keep an eye on it. Feeling relived and like a fraud for going now

  • Hi Funkyfee,

Thank you for giving us the update on your appointment today. I am delighted to hear that you got the all clear, but please don't feel a fraud for getting this investigated. We are always advised to get any change in our breasts looked at, so you did the right thing. It sounds as though you are still worried about the enlarged gland. There would be no harm in phoning the breast care nurse to see if she can tell you a bit more about this.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
