Panicking over menopausal spotting

New here and hoping for some advice please.

I'm 54 and GP says it's safe to assume that I'm menopausal due to my age even though I haven't had symptoms of night sweats, hot flushes etc. Was put on cyclical hrt in Nov last year and was changed over to continuous hrt beginning of Jan. End of Jan had mirena removed and a month later had a week long, painful bleed. Nothing more until 2 weeks ago when I had some light brown spotting for 3 days and then again it started again yesterday and is heavier spotting than before.  GP told me she is "very concerned" and has referred me for a hysteroscopy. Am having an ultrasound tomorrow and then a hysteroscopy at some stage but don't know when. I saw on my nhs app that a consultant's appointment has been booked for weds 12th July for suspected cancer but it says **Not for patient attendance**    Can anyone tell me what this means?

I have bad health anxiety and have done the very thing I tell everyone else not to do and googled extensively.....terrified by what I have read as I do have urinary frequency some days, always tired, have frequent indigestion, upper stomach pains and pelvic pains.  I've managed to get myself in a terrible state and my head is all over the place, very teary and convinced myself of the worst case scenario. I know there's nothing I can do but would really appreciate someone to chat to and if possible some idea of what the message on the consultant appointment might mean

Thanks x

  • I hope your ultrasound has gone alright today and perhaps given you more information also. All I can advise you at this stage is to take one day at a time, keep busy and stay off goggle as it really does not help. I'm guilty of doing the same and really could have saved myself a lot of worry.

I had the mirena coil removed at the age of 55 , like you told I was menopausal and like you I also had a heavy painful bleed a few weeks later. I then started with spotting and irregular bleeding that lasted for weeks on end. I had bloating, indigestion, pelvic pain and stabbing pain in one side and bladder issues. My ultrasound scan was followed by same day hysteroscopy and found cysts on both ovaries, fibroids/polyps and a thickened womb lining. I had blood tests, womb biopsies, CT and MRI scan. Results from all but the blood tests came back as normal. I had the polyps removed and another mirena coil put in and am on 6 month checks (scans) for the cysts and womb lining (biopsies). It has been attributed to hormonal imbalnce. I've had my initial 6 month checks and am due my next ones this summer.

My blood test results were normal for CA125 but raised for CA19.9 so I have had further investigations for that.. though I'm hoping its gynae related as the tumour markers have fallen a lot since the coil was put in.

The consultants appointment 'not for patients attendance' might just be a meeting of medical professionals to discuss your results or possibly a telephone consultation with you rather than in person. My results so far have always been by letter, I've never actually seen my consultant. That is just a guess on my part though.

I wish you well as you go through the various tests and hope for a good outcome for you

  • Hi Leni56

Thank you so much for replying!

I had an ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound on weds (problems at work and unexpected issues woth family member have kept me so busy that I haven't had time to reply sooner)

I was told that the scan showed a good thin endometrium lining. They couldn't find my left ovary and didn't make any comment on the right one. I had considerable pain on my right side for the rest of the day and night but that passed by the following morning. The spotting has stopped  for now.

I was told that I'd be telephoned by the consultant's dept by Fri to make an appt to see him but I haven't yet received a call from them.

I have tried my best to stay away from googling symptoms especially as I'm now feeling constantly nauseous, still having days when I constantly need a wee abd experiencing weird random shootimg pains in my vaginal region! I'm a terrible worrier and tend to bottle everything up so as to avoid letting other people know that I constantly overthink and panic!

I'm glad to hear that your tests came back normal and that the markers have decreased since having your mirena. I hope that everything continues to ho well for you.

I can't thank you enough for responding to my panicked post,  I really do appreciate it

    X
