Breast cancer - newly diagnosed

Hi - I've come to join the club, having been diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer including a couple of lymph nodes.  Got my Magseeds this morning.  Never had contrast before, and that's only my third ever mammogram (ouch!)

My first oncology appointment is next week and it's booked for an hour.  Is that going to be exam and talking, or might it also include things like the staging scan, the PICC line insertion?  The consultant last week said chemo would start by the end of the month, but I appreciate things can change as new information is gathered.

  • Hi UnaPalomaBianca,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I am so sorry to hear why you're here.

How are you coping with your diagnosis? It always comes as a shock to the system and takes a bit of getting used to. It is impossible to say what will be done at your oncology appointment. My first one was just to discuss my treatment options. As you seem to know that you are going for chemo at the end of the month, it is possible that you may get your PICC line inserted.

I hope that your appointment goes well. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you.  Good to hear that you are through the worst of it and out the other side.  There's so much to think about, at the moment it's this appointment, that appointment, next week's appointment.  I shall wear a groove in the road between home and hospital!

  • Thanks for the warm welcome.  As for coping with the diagnosis, I was very pragmatic about it, but have had the occasional nearly-weepy moment when it all feels very real.  Having the contrast injected today made me think about the details of a PICC line, and that freaks me out a bit.

Because it's triple-negative, there's no question of hormone therapy, so it sounds like we'll do some chemo, then a lumpectomy, followed by radiotherapy.  I'm putting my trus in the science and the clinicians to recommend what's right.

  • Sounds like we are in the same boat. Triple negative and will start chemo. Seeing doctor tomorrow.  Like you a mix of practical and overwhelmed.  We can do this. Xxx

  • Una & Rachel

just remember this journey is short term it's up and down I've been through it but trust me you will come out the other side smiling

you are beautiful inside and out good luck

    love Lara ️

  • Thanks Lara. I guess its just one step forward and as Una says trust in the science to be brilliant supported by as positive an attitude as possiible.  Thanks for your support and hope you and your friend are doing well xxx

  • HI,

We all have some weepy moments, but crying is a good stress reliever, so don't worry about it. It's the thought of the PICC line that is freaking you out, more than the reality - I'm sure that you will cope just fine with it.

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Rachel,

I hope that all goes well for you tomorrow. A positive attitude in all of this certainly helps in your recovery. We all have down days, but it's how quickly we get up again that matters.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
