Mum has secondary liver cancer, hoping she can have chemo

My mum has just been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer and has been given a few months without treatment we are devastated she has no symptoms other than some tummy pain and swelling
Mum is awaiting confirmation to see if she can undergo chemo, I am scared of the possible side effects for her and will it help prolong her life - any support appreciated Thank you

    A very warm welcome to our forum.

    I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. There are different types of chemo, all with different side-effects. It is often used to keep the tumour in check and give people a little longer with their loved ones. Ask her care team which one they propose to give her and what the usual side-effects are.

    I am here for you any tme you want to chat. I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer, which had spread to her lungs, liver, brain and bone. It's a hard journey, when all you can do is to be there to support your mum.

    Hi Thank you so much for contacting This is the worst thing no amount of money or anything can rectify this

    Mum has been offered some pallative chemo they say this will prolong things for her so there is some hope I am so worried about how the chemo will affect her though as she is active and looks so well at the moment

    Hi,

    I am glad to hear that your mum has been offered some palliative chemo and hope that it works for her. If the side-effects are bad, she can always stop, but at least she will have tried it. There is always a balance between quantity of time and quality of time and some people do decide to opt for the latter.

    I wish that I had discovered this site when my mum was with me. Sadly, I didn't find it until I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have now had 2 bouts, but 13 years on, I am so fortunate in that I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

    You are so right, no amount of money can rectify this. Just be there for your mum, support her as best you can, see that her pain is well controlled. Is there anywhere she would like to visit or anyone that she would like to see? If so, perhaps you could facilitate this? Standing alongside her in this final journey is one of the hardest things that you'll ever have to do, but your support will be invaluable to her.

    Sorry too hear about your mum, my mum is currently having palliative chemo but her prognosis is only 18 months, I am finding it difficult to deal with.
