Please can someone with more knowledge give me advice

Hi all (1st post so apologies if something wrong with it)

- my father age 74 recently was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer which had spread to his liver (only small lump). He had the surgery and has just completed 3 months of Chemo. Got some good news today 11th Jan, that the CT scan was clear, however we were then given some confusing advice - He needs an MRI on the liver as the CT scan isn't 100% accurate there. We weren't told how accurate a CT scan is or a MRI scan is for picking up cancer post chemo. Also we were told that both the MRI and CT scans aren't accurate enough, so they have suggested 3 more months of Chemo despite not finding cancer.

My father was strong with the 1st 3 months of chemo but of course it has done some mental and physical damage. He can probably cope with 3 months more, however, he'd much rather not if scans are 'accurate'.

So looking to see if this is 100% the best idea and double checking there's no other scans, private or NHS available to check cancer post chemo to determine if 3 more months of Chemo are necessary / the best advice.

  • Hello andypeers

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis although it does sound as if there's positive news in amongst all that you were told at his most recent appointment.

CT scans and MRI scans work in slightly different ways to produce images and it's not uncommon for patients to need one or both in order for the clinical team to have all the information they need.

It does sound as if you've been given some confusing information and I'd suggest giving our nurses a call to chat things through with them. I'm sure they will be happy to try and answer any questions you have about the scans and offer any information and advice they can to help your Dad going forwards. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Sending my best wishes for your Dad's continued recovery.
