worried - husband has incurable prostate cancer

Hi,  i am finding this really difficult, my husband is currently 46 years old, diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer 3 1/2 years ago at the age of 42, psa 38.5 gleason 9 stage T3B. Underwent Hormone therapy, 6 rounds of chemotherapy and 37 radiotherapy treatments, fast forward 3 years and after being off hormone treatment for the last 15 months his psa levels started to rise slowly, hospital said they would intervene once they got above 2.46 - which they now at 4. Bone scan done and a ct scan done, they have now found it has escaped to Lymph node and is now non cureable, back on the hormone treatment immediately to try and stem it from progressing for the time being which has absolutely floored us with being so young. now waiting to see what other treatments may be an option appointment on the 2nd November with consultants. Just wondered if anyone else may have the same diagnosis.

thank you for reading

  • Hi so sorry about your husband getting cancer at that age and it spreading slightly to be uncurable.

    I was diagnosed at 64 years old thinking about retirement.found mine, T3b N1  M1b, gleason 8.

Prostate gone to lymph node's pelvis spine ribs and a lung, psa 1580.that was 2016 February classed as uncurable for two years then palative care 2018,

I was straight on hormone therapy tablets and 3 monthly hormone injections, then chemotherapy for four months.

Im trying to give you the idea that just because things have changed it isn't the end and things can still be done. Hope he soon gets a treatment plan sorted.

Im still managing ok and a carer for my darling wife of over 50 years she has dementia and other problems.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply . Glad to hear things are still going good for you. His bones scan is still clear he back on hormone tablets just now they have given him a higher dose as thry keeping him on the tablets until we have been to oncologist 2nd November as there was mention of a Pet scan which is being looked in to, so if that is an option he has to stay on tablets rather than injection? Apparently hormone gives a cloudy picture on pet scan so he would need to stop hormone before pet scan can be given. Tablets come out of the system quicker than the injection, and depending on location of lymph there is a treatment called sabre I think

some type of radiation that can help

thanks again will keep my fingers crossed for you also

  • Hi lynnie, thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me. I've been on a strong hormone therapy for over two years and feeling very rough had dose dropped twice to see if things improved, which they did temporarily.  So oncologist took me off enzalutamide for 2 months and i improved greatly, so ct scan and another bone scan (9 so far ).  My cancer is coming back slowly last count 9.7,  it did jump to 67 couple of years ago, and i felt fine so im not to bothered yet. As feeling good in myself and managing ok.

Just waiting for oncologist to figure out what next.

  • Hi Lynnie,

my husband is also 46, diagnosed in July 2022 with advanced prostate cancer, mets in lymph nodes, pelvis and bones. Think he must have been undiagnosed for quite some time. We are currently half way through 6 rounds of chemo and he is also on hormone therapy. I understand your worry, I feel the same. No idea what the future holds, not sure I have any advice but happy to have found you.

    Aims x

  • It's scary really, especially with them being a bit younger definitely. We have an appointment 2nd nov to see next steps, he already had chemo 3 years ago along with radiotherapy so not sure where we go from here xx

    thanks  for reaching out

keep fighting on and good luck please keep me posted xx
