Prostate cancer, worried wife

My (very youthful) 80 year old husband's PSA has been creeping up and is now 12.  He has zero symptoms of prostate cancer  but his consultant has recommended MRI and bone scans.  He has had a very rough few years - major RTA with extensive facial reconstructive surgery, followed by tonsil cancer - now in remission. He has told consultant he will not consider a biopsy or radiotherapy ( he had extensive radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with awful side effects) and his Consultant is in agreement, but says if indicated by scans he could have hormone treatment.  He also said at his age he may never have real problems with his prostate.  Husband has had enlarged prostate for years and been on Tamsulosin.  Rectal exam = no bumps but reasonably firm.   I'm really very anxious about these scan results, but he won't discuss it at all and says he wishes he had never agreed to scans as he has no symptoms. He had the MRI this week but bone scan not for another 3 weeks and we are due to go on holiday before the results, which the hospital say won't be available for several weeks due to backlog.  Really stressed about it all. Thanks for listening

  • Thank you , you too.  Do report back xx

  • Hi danii,

I was diagnosed feb 2016 psa 1500 after scans and biopsy finally (4months later)started treatment, psa 1581, im classed as uncurable (palative care),, my uninvited guest went from prostate to lymph node's pelvis spine ribs and a lung, im still here still looking after my darling wife who has dementia.

I was diagnosed at 64 thinking of retirement and enjoying my life and doing things around the house which i still do now and again keep things tidy and doing shopping. Just alot slower now.

  • Hi Billy

I have been reading your posts too. Like most other people I'm quite amazed by how you cope I have been quite upset by lots of stories on here but it's also inspiring and positive too. We'll know tomorrow our situation but it really helps to know other people feel the same. I really hope you have many more years yet and that they'll hold a lot of great times.

  • Hi danii,

I've always thought keeping positive helps, don't know if I'm right but im keeping going and sure.  Oh and keeping well clear of Google medical ideas always the worst case scenario.

    Hope things go well today.

Keep looking after yourself, no good if you get ill.

  • Hi Billy/Daniel

Bone scan done, now the wait.  Husband has appointment in Urology on 20th, so hoping all results available.  Supposed to be going on a cruise on 23rd and really not in a holiday mood!  My husband is quite philosophical about it all, but I'm finding it so hard to be upbeat in an attempt to stop the rest of the family worrying. Do hope the results are reassuring Danii and thanks Billy for your positivity.  We have been here before 3 years ago when husband had ,( unrelated) tonsil cancer - now in remission. However it isn't any easier this time round.
