Currently going through Lymphoma Investigation

Hi, I'm a 20 year old male, I have multiple enlarged lymph nodes in Groin, Armpits and Neck. Noticed the first ones in my groin around 2 years ago, started to notice more as I searched for more. Don't think the groin ones have changed in size but obviously popped up in Armpits not long after and neck more recently.

I went to the doctors 2 Years ago who said all was fine, bloods all good. So didn't think much of it, always felt fine, mild night sweats but not every night, no itching weight loss etc.

Fast forward 2 years and I am now on the urgent cancer pathway due to multiple enlarged lymph nodes. I have health anxiety so this is not a good thing to hear. I was referred to Haemotology who set me up an initial appointment around 2 weeks ago. I went for full bloods (about 7 different containers full of blood) and all came back fine except being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. No inflammation at all.

The Haemotolgist conducted a physical exam and said the lymph glands are palpable but mostly small, but he would send me for a CT scan and set up another meeting in 3 weeks.

I have been for the CT scan and had an appointment booked for next Wednesday. My anxiety is through the roof and I am already convinced I have lymphoma. Constantly googling which type I have and prognosis etc.

Just wanted to type because I don't really know who to talk to. I feel alone and very scared. My family are supportive but I don't want to worry them too much until I know for certain.

  • Hi there, firstly I am very sorry you're going through all of this. I know from my own experience how daunting and worrying it can be to go through this process. I'm sure everyone here will tell you the same, there are lots of reasons for lymph nodes to be enlarged, many of which are nothing to worry about. I know you will have a whole array of emotions and worries right now but the most important thing you can do is maintain a positive mindset (easier said than done) and stop referring to Dr Google (believe me I know how tempting this is, but I made this mistake too). I know its scary but it's a positive thing that you are now on the urgent pathway and your haematology team are investigating things. IF (and its still a big if) your CT has shown some abnormalities which require further investigations, I would imagine the next step they will take is sending you for a biopsy, despite all the blood tests and scans, the only concrete way to rule out or diagnose lymphoma is through biopsy and then having an expert look at this through a microscope.

Just to give you some background on myself, I am a 26yo male that comes from a medical background and I'm currently 2 months into treatment following a stage 2 classical hodgkins lymphoma diagnosis which came completely out of the blue. Initially I began to push my family and even my partner away following my diagnosis as I didn't want to worry them as well, but I can assure you that your family, partner and friends are very important right now and are all rooting for you, speak to them, tell them your concerns, they are in your corner and will support you through anything.

I truly wish you the very best for your follow up appointment next Wednesday, I know how scary it can be and how easy it is to let the mind wander. Remember, there are lots of reasons for lymph nodes to be englarged, lymphoma isn't the only explanation for what you're going through. Trust your haematology team, they are amazing at what they do and will support you through everything. IF (remember that it's still only an if) lymphoma is the reason for the lymph node enlargement, just know that lymphoma is VERY treatable, treatment is tough yes, but it has incredibly high success rates.

I hope that maybe something I have written has put your mind at ease slightly. You are not alone in any of this, please reach out to your family/friends/partner, there's strength in needing others, or alternatively reach out on the forum again, there are many wonderful and supportive people here.

    Take care my friend.

  • Hi Calum

Thankyou so much for taking some time to read and respond to my post, I really appreciate it right now.

Its a very worrying time but I am trying to keep my mind busy by playing football/spending time with family/friends/girlfriend so that is helping. It's just when I am alone and get too much time to think.

I am very sorry to hear about your diagnosis and hope all treatment is going well.

Take care also, really appreciate it.

    Ben

  • Keeping my fingers crossed for you with your appt today Ben.
