can someone please help

Hi I  have been suffering from health anxiety for years at the moment I have got the most scary idea in my head and I know it sounds stupid and I can’t tell anyone in real life. I am convinced I have got cancer I have been reading and hearing about dogs that can detect cancer by sniffing you . I have a friend whose dog I see regularly and it keeps sniffing my stomach it does this every time and I have convinced myself that I could have cancer I don’t have any symptoms so can’t contact the dr like I would normally I have read stories about dogs picking up their owners cancer and I can’t think of anything else except this I’m terrified can anyone calm me down I don’t know what to do to stop these thoughts thanks.

i wasnt sure where to put this so sorry if it shouldnt .be on here

  • Hi pumpkinzz.  If you are really concerned that you might have cancer, then of course, get yourself checked out.  I happen to believe that Animals can detect cancer, I have seen evidence of this.  However, I think that your problems go much deeper.  Lots of people suffer from health anxiety, and they are always convinced that they are dying of some horrible disease.  Have you spoken to your doctor about this?  I would suggest some sort of counselling, because until you can work through the issues of why you are overly obsessed with your health, you will never have peace of mind.  I will give you an example.  My cousin (who is now 81 and in fairly good health) has spent her entire life going to Doctors and hospitals, absolutely convinced that she has some terrible illness and hasn't got long to live.  Do you want to live your life like this?  I expect the answer is 'no'.  Get some counselling.  That's my advice and good luck, Violet, x

  • Hi,

I've met two of the cancer-detecting dogs and their handlers in person and they are highly trained in what they do. On a par with guide dogs or police sniffer dogs.

If your friend's dog is showing an interest, that probably means you've spilt some food on your clothes or it is reacting to your anxiety.

Health anxiety is a real problem, as fear just inflames fear and, before you know it, you are convinced that you are in the worst imaginable case possible.

See your GP by all means but make an appointment for your health anxiety and use this as an example of your anxiety.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hi pumpkinzz

Dogs can sniff out all sorts of things ... migraines, low blood sugar, stress and anxiety, to name just a few. It doesn't imply cancer. But do go and speak to a doctor about how this has made you feel and for help dealing with the health anxiety.

  • My view is the same as everybody else's. There is some suggestion that dogs can sniff out cancer, especially if trained to do so. I have no idea how robust the studies on this are, but even if it is true, it definitely does not mean that a dog sniffing you indicates you have cancer. The most likely reasons her dog is sniffing you is either because you are a new person in the house or as somebody else said, you dropped some food or even just touched your stomach after eating and they can smell the food.

  • Hello

i understand what you are going through. I am 56 years old and suffered with health anxiety for many years. Any lumps I find I think I have cancer. I have found a small lump on the lip of my vagina and convinced myself I have cancer. I have been to the GP who has started me on Sertraline it does take the edge off
