When you attend the clinic you will probably be seen by a nurse first and asked a few general questions. You will probably then see the consultant who will discuss your symptoms before examining your breasts. Most units now are more of a one stop shop, where they attempt to carry out the various tests and scans on the same day as your initial appointment. This can mean that you are in the unit for up to 4 hours when you are moving from one department to another, although most appointments are over quicker. In smaller units, you may be called back for these.

Depending upon the findings of your examination, you may then be sent for a mammogram, an  ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. You will only be told what's wrong if the consultant is pretty sure  that it is or isn't cancer, but in most cases you have to wait a further 1-2 weeks to get the result. If you do have to have a biopsy, make sure to ask when you are likely to get your results before you leave the clinic. Waiting times can vary from area to area and, it's easier if you know when to expect them.
