Brain cancer

My dad was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer about 3 months ago,  originally the health centre were treating him for what they thought was inflammation of the neck and had him doing all kinds of neck exercises,  he went to the doctors 6 times and the hospital twice to try get an X-ray but they wouldn't give him one ,  my dad who I have never seen cry in almost 40 years was in so much discomfort that my mum phoned the doctor again who only after being told that my dad could hardly move from bed again agreed to send an ambulance,  in the hospital after getting the X-ray the he had been trying to get for 6 months it turned out to be a broken bone in his neck he got sent for further scans and it revealed lung cancer that's spread to the brain and it's terminal   after 5 weeks in the hospital and 1 dose of radiation therapy he is now out of hospital and at home , he's been home about 7 weeks and was doing well considering now in the space of a week he's fallen twice and he can't walk anywhere unassisted , his appetite has gone rite down , his memory is going and a lot of the things he's saying is making no sense, he's driving at lot of water and peeing a lot but not a lot bowl movement and he's always saying he's roasting but his skin isn't , he's also sleeping a lot more

  • Hello TonyMo

Welcome to the forum although I am very sorry to read about your Dad's diagnosis and the events leading up to it. It sounds as if it's been a very difficult few months for you all.

I'm glad to hear that Dad is home. Do you have some nursing support to help manage his symptoms and keep him comfortable? If things have changed in the past week then do get in touch with them or with Dad's GP for some support and advice.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses then they are back in the office tomorrow on 0808 800 4040 (9am - 5pm).

    Best wishes,

  • Hi TonyMo, I am in a similar situation with my mum. She went to the GP due to bad headaches and they found brain tumours that have spread from Lung cancer, this was at the end of January 2020. Since then mum has been in a pretty bad way, she's broken 2 bones in her spine also not due to falling but deterioration. she came out of willow wood yesterday and has already had a fall early hours this morning and been taking to A&E, she has come home again approx 1 hour ago and is now fast asleep. Does your dad have someone looking after him constantly? Or is he living with someone? I'm currently waiting for someone to come and give mum a pendant alarm today as she lives alone (I've had to move out due to my own health recently). My mum is having the same issue with bowl movements, eating and sleeping. She's gone dramatically downhill and her confusion seems to be getting worse. Does your dad have a Macmillan nurse? Or district nurses? Best wishes

  • Hi Clair93 ,

my mum lives with my dad but she's in her 60s and has c o p d along with a bad knee after a replacement and struggles with taking him to the bathroom or back into the bedroom from the living room,  he doesn't have a McMillan nurse yet and my mums been waiting a while now to get carers in to help get him ready and a wash in the morning, his district nurse pops in maybe once a week and I'm struggling to notice what she actually does for him ,  I'm up at my mum and dads as often as possible to help in anyway way I can , his dilerium is getting really bad he can't understand game shows that we watched as a family for years or even football matches , he comes out with the most random of stuff  , it's so sad because 3 months ago he was such an independent man and he can't walk along , struggles to talk , eat  and his arms and legs are getting stick thin ,,

best regards and thank you for your reply

  • Hello Tonymo, I am so sorry to read of your dads illness. I lost my husband on 15th April with lung cancer and brain mets. He was diagnosed in December. Can I ask are you having visits from nurses to help at home? We had help from wonderful NHS nurses whilst my husband was in his final weeks. He had had a stroke 3 weeks before he died so couldn't walk. I know how tough it is and what you are going through. It is a great comfort to us that my husband was able to stay at home and died surrounded by his family.

    Thinking of you. Stay strong,

    Karen

  • Hi Karen,

thank you ,  after he fell a couple of times we got the doctor to give him a check over to see if he done himself anymore damage but he was very blunt told us he wasn't going to get better his condition was very serious and this maybe be the new way he is ,  my mum had a visit from carers about an hour ago which we've been waiting over a week for an evaluation they were asking him all the questions and he was telling them he does everything for himself which is the total opposite as my mum and I do pretty much everything between us , she's now going to report back to the office and we should hear back in a couple of weeks,  we're just not sure how far along he is ,  some times I'm afraid to help him up incase anything happens
